Election Day: Falcons Still Receiving Votes
Bowling Green received three votes in the initial USA Today/ESPN Division I Top 25 Coaches' Poll ... currently, BG is the only MAC squad to find themselves receiving votes ... future opponent Iowa State also picked up seven after the first week of voting while Notre Dame snuck in at 25th overall ... Iowa State also received a vote in the AP poll while the Fighting Irish are ranked 23rd ... no MAC school is recognized on the AP list.
Mark The First One a Win, Again and Again ...
The Falcons 81-56 victory over Valparaiso on Friday (Nov. 9) night was the fifth consecutive victorious home opener under head coach Curt Miller ... the 25 point decision is the second largest margin of victory on opening day in the Miller era ... in 2005 the Falcons opened the home schedule with a 78-50 win over IPFW (Nov. 18) posting not only the largest opening day margin of victory under Miller but the second best since Jaci Clark's Falcons beat Youngstown State by 38 on Dec. 1, 1994, 76-38.
Four for the Road
Since taking over the reins of the BG women's basketball program, head coach Curt Miller's Falcons are 4-3 in the road opener ... after beating Youngstown State 71-61 in 2001, BG beat Florida Atlantic (77-62, Dec. 6) then dropped a pair to YSU (79-67, Nov. 22, 2003) and Ohio State (89-41, Nov. 12, 2004) ... in the last two seasons, BGSU has beat IUPUI (66-55, Nov. 25, 2005) and Detroit (68-37, Nov. 10, 2006) en route to winning their first games at home and away sites.
Glancing at the MAC
After one weekend of play, Bowling Green and Buffalo are the only two MAC East programs to survive with wins ... each squad is 1-0 while all other Eastern foes dropped their season openers ... in the West, Central Michigan is the lone program to win twice in as many outings ... Eastern Michigan and Toledo each have a 1-0 record under their belt ... Ball State and Northern Illinois split their opening weekend while, despite putting up a win, Western Michigan is currently 1-2.
Three or More Seventeen Times Over
Dating back to Jan 28, 2007, the Falcons are currently riding a seventeen game streak where three or more players have scored points in double-digit figures ... Lindsey Goldsberry (21), Lauren Prochaska (19) and Tracy Pontius (10) are the newest and youngest combination to join membership of the streak ... in fact, prior to Friday's (Nov. 9) game, no freshman had been included on that list ... Goldsberry has also been on last list just twice ... senior Kate Achter was on a major contributor to the streak on fifteen occasions ... the Falcons have seen three players score 10-plus on nine occasions, four score in the double-digits seven times and saw six players score 10-plus once (Feb. 20 vs. Kent State).
Debuting Like a Pro[chaksa]
In her debut with the Falcons, freshman guard Lauren Prochaska shoot 46.7 percent from the field (7-15) for a class high 19 points ... she was also a perfect 4-of-4 from the charity stripe ... in 29 minutes she also stole a game high four passes and ripped down five boards ... the rookie also had a pair of assists and blocks.
Gold'en Girl
Junior captain Lindsey Goldsberry set new career records in points (21), three-point field-goals made (5), field-goals made (7), field-goal attempted (10), and minutes played (32) while tying her existing personal record in rebounds (8) ... Goldsberry made her third career start under Miller as a Falcon.
MAC East Gold[sberry]
As if her personal record setting night was not enough, Goldsberry was recognized by the Mid-American Conference as the MAC East Player of the Week ... the award was the first of her career ... under Miller, eight Falcons have earned the weekly award since Francine Miller first won it on Nov. 19, 2001 ... since that date, the Falcons have racked up 23 POW awards ... 14 of the awards are eastern division POWs while nine were western division awards.
Stirring the Starting Line-Up
Friday, Nov. 9 marked the first time in two seasons that BGSU saw a dramatic change in their starting line-up ... Chelsea Albert, Kate Achter, Crystal Murdaugh, Lauren Prochaska and Lindsey Goldsberry were on the floor for the opening tip instead of the constant combination of Achter along side Ali Mann, Liz Honegger, Carin Horne, and Megan Thorburn ... in fact, tip-off marked the first time more than one freshman started a season opening contest since Mann and Honegger entered the line-up on
Nov. 25, 2003 against Detroit in Anderson Arena ... currently, Achter leads all Falcons with 91 career starts ... 90 of Achter's 91 starts have come in consecutive games.
Falcons vs. the Champions
Belmont is the only team on the Falcons' schedule to win their conference last season, yet the Falcons will see multiple squads who finished in the top three of their league ... the Bruins finished atop the Atlantic Sun (25-7, 16-2) just a year ago ... possible opponent Gardner-Webb was the third overall team from the Atlantic Sun (14-17, 10-8)... former opponent Valparaiso was the runner-up in the Mid-Continent Conference (20-11, 11-3) in 2006-07 ... Delaware finished in a tie for second in the Colonial Athletic Association (26-6, 16-2) ... Florida Gulf Coast, a first-season Division I opponent, was last season's DII National runners-up ... this season FGCU is participating in the Atlantic Sun conference.
You Are My Sunshine ...
Bowling Green will have the chance to play four of 12 teams from the Atlantic Sun Conference in 2007-08... BGSU will see Lipscomb (Nov. 16) and current champion Belmont (Nov. 18) over the course of a five day stay in Nashville, Tenn. ... the Falcons will then face Florida Gulf Coast University on Nov. 30 in Ithaca, N.Y. and have the chance to face Gardner-Webb on Dec. 1 in the same location ... of the four teams, three finished in the upper half of the league last year ... the Falcons have never faced an Atlantic Sun affiliate under Miller.
The Opponent - Lipscomb
Coach Frank Bennett's Lady Bisons are 1-2 entering into Thursday's match-up with the Falcons after beating local rival Fisk University at home in Allen Arena on Tuesday (Nov. 13) 123-22 ... the 101 point victory was one point of tying the NCAA record for highest winning margin ... it was the third time for the Lady Bisons to post 123 points in the NCAA era ... on the night, Lipscomb shot 57 percent from the field and held Fisk to just nine field goals in the contest ... every player on the Lipscomb roster scored in the effort with six players scoring in the double-digits ... Lipscomb picked up nearly six-times as many steals as their opponent (21-4) and nearly seven-times as many assists (26-4) ... prior to the Fisk routing, Lipscomb fell to Arkansas (87-60) and Tennessee-Martin (66-53) ... both contests were on the road ... last season, the Lady Bisons finished in the middle of the 12 team pack tied for sixth in the Atlantic Sun Conference ... Bennett and Co. return nine letter winners and four starters from the 2006-07 squad that went 8-21 on the year.
The Series
This will be the first meeting between the programs.
The Opponent - Belmont
The Bruins of head coach Tony Cross are the current Atlantic Sun champions after finishing the conference season at 16-2 just one year ago ... overall the team was 25-7 ... the Bruins earned the 14th seed in the NCAA tournament but fell to Georgia in the first round ... Belmont returns nine letterwinners from that squad and four of their starting five ... today, the Bruins are 1-1 after beating Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and dropping one to Texas-San Antonio ... the newest starting five under Cross accounted for 91-of-110 points scored in the Bruins first two outings ... the first five are averaging 45.5 ppg while the bench is averaging 9.5 ppg ... the team shot in the mid-30-percent [34.6 - 37.1] against UTSA and Texas A&M - Corpus Christi ... Brooke Sunday, a junior forward, was the only Bruin to score in double-digits both games ... Belmont will host Mississippi State in their home opener at the Curb Event Center on Nov. 15 before welcoming the Falcons on Nov. 18 ... the Bruins hold a 1-0 advantage over the Falcons in the all-time series.
