Falcon Family Fun Day

NASHVILLE - After their 54-42 win over Lipscomb last night (Thursday, Nov. 15), the Bowling Green State University women's basketball squad was rewarded with a surprise activity that was planned by the coaching staff. The Falcons, who are currently in the midst of two consecutive `off-days' spent the majority of today's afternoon cruising along the scenic Cumberland River on board the General Jackson Riverboat enjoying lunch and the sounds of Tim Watson and his Black Creek band's show, "Now That's a Country Christmas".
One may ask themselves why BG would gear themselves up for Christmas this early in November, but `Christmas before Thanksgiving' seems to be the current theme of the `Orange and Brown Elves' non-conference trip. Not only did the team kick the first extended outing of the season off by watching National Lampoon's "Christmas Vacation" on the way to the Columbus airport on Wednesday afternoon, but subtle touches of the holiday season have been visible, and often pointed out by the team, as they navigate their way through Music City, USA.
Aboard the 300 foot long `paddlewheeler' the Falcons pulled off their best impression of the beloved Griswold family (minus the Jelly of the Month Club membership) taking photos and laughing at the antics of Watson, a country singer/comedian, and his band. At the climax of the show, senior Kate Achter was pulled on stage to `learn to play the fiddle' and give new life to the band as they energized the crowd with their rendition of a fiddling classic entitled "Orange Blossom Special".
Much to both parties surprise, a vacationing couple was assigned seats at the same table as a group Falcons and were instantly welcomed into the extended Falcon Family. After learning more about their fellow Table Five dwellers the gentleman of the couple, a retired physical education teacher and self-proclaimed All-American, focused his attention on point guard Tracy Pontius. With a smirk on his face and a twinkle in his eye, he asked about her shooting chances as a floor general and offered the point guard a bit of friendly on the court advice. The advice was then dully noted as he told the table he "once scored 43 points" ... with surprised looks on their faces the Falcons leaned forward to soak in more knowledge from the former athlete, but to their dismay were informed those 43 points were scored throughout the entire season; not in a single game.
Before leaving the boat, BGSU coaches and players alike attempted to convert a few southern basketball fans to the cheer for the Mid-American Conference as they invited everyone from the couple sitting at Table Five to the members of Watson's band, one of which was a Belmont alum, to wear Orange and come out to support the Falcons over the weekend.
BG's tour of Nashville will come to a conclusion after the Falcons square off with the Bruins in the Curb Event Center on Sunday. The afternoon game is scheduled to tip-off at 3:00 p.m. CST (4:00 p.m. EST).
