BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) -
HEAD COACH Louis Orr
"We couldn't play much better offensively. Looking at the stats, when you shoot 66 percent from the floor and 58 percent from three-point range, we can't do much better than that offensively. And, we shared the basketball. We had 19 assists, and we had three guys with five or more. I thought Joe Jakubowski gave us great minutes off the bench, with six assists and zero turnovers. He and Darryl (Clements) played great. And, I thought Marc Larson did a nice job. We did a nice job of getting into transition and getting the ball inside. (Ryne) Hamblet made some big baskets late, to kind of ward off the run.
"I give Morehead State a lot of credit. They are a scrappy, scrappy team, and they don't quit. (Leon) Buchanan -- he just works. Nothing fancy, he's just a hard worker, and he scrapped and clawed his way to 35 points. We've got to cut down our fouls; we had too many unnecessary fouls. And, we could cut down on our turnovers. But, we couldn't be much better offensively, in terms of shooting percentages. It's nice to get the first home win, and we just want to keep building."
The team seemed to do a good job of withstanding runs, and keeping Morehead State from getting close in the second half.
"I've noticed this about this team: we've been able to make key buckets, make key plays and get some key stops. They cut it to eight points, and Hamblet hit a 3. That was a big 3, almost out of a broken offense. That was a big shot, because if he misses that and they go down and score, it's a five- or six-point game. We've been able to withstand runs, and that's a credit to our guys. They've played with courage, and Hamblet provided some senior leadership."
What do you take from this game?
"Well, our offensive execution, and the balance. I love the balance. We shared the ball, had good assist-to-turnover ratio, had good inside-out play. We shot 12 3's, which is good. But, we've got to cut down on fouls, and we have to be able to handle success. We have to have that killer instinct. When we play this well offensively, we have to make sure that we do not let up on the defensive end. If we can combine this offensive productivity with more defensive intensity, I think you will see this team make a big jump. Because you've got to do both, and I thought we depended a little too much on our offense today."
How did you feel in your first regular-season game here at Anderson Arena?
"It's great to have a home court. I've been a head coach at two different places, and played at great arenas, but they were off campus. It's nice to be able to walk down from your office and go to the court. It's nice to be able to play where you practice every day. And, I feel honored to be a part of such a great tradition. Our home court is important to us, and we appreciate the support from the school and the community."
JUNIOR Nate Miller
The offense was a balanced team effort today, and you guys shot over 66 percent. Can you talk about the offensive success today?
"Our coaches always talk about trusting the offense, that if we trust our offense, we will get the shots that we want. Today we trusted the offense, got those shots and knocked them down. Everyone shot the ball well, and shot with confidence."
You were able to withstand Morehead State's runs in the second half, and you never let them get too close.
"We were knocking down shots today, but our defense wasn't as good as it has been. They shot 39 percent from the field. But, we made out shots when we had to. Everyone stayed together, stayed focused and kept their heads in the game, and that's what we've got to do. And, we were able to get the crucial stops toward the end, when we needed them."
