KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Freshman forward David Solway tallied his first collegiate goal just 1:57 into overtime to give the Bowling Green State University hockey team a 3-2 come-from-behind win on Friday evening over the Western Michigan Broncos. The game was held at WMU's Lawson Arena.
The victory moved the Falcons to an even 2-2-0 on the season, as they now sit 1-1-0 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. With the loss, the Broncos fell to 2-3-0 and 0-1-0, respectively.
"Every game is important in this league, and we didn't get any points out of the first game, so we needed to get points tonight," said BG Head Coach Scott Paluch. "I thought overall, it was just a tremendous road effort by our guys. We had a great bench and just a real good road attitude. The guys stayed with it and we did all the things we needed to do to give ourselves a chance."
Despite the Falcons strong efforts, their chances of winning were looking grim heading into the final minutes of play, as they trailed the Broncos 2-1. That was until senior defenseman Mike Nesdill tallied his first goal of the season with just 2:15 left in regulation to knot the game up at 2-2. The Phoenix, Ariz. native positioned himself perfectly as Solway found him from behind the goal line inside the right-wing circle where he proceeded to fire a shot past Bronco goaltender Riley Gill.
For Solway, the helper was his first collegiate point as junior Brandon Svendsen also assisted on the play.
The two teams would trade chances in the final two minutes then, but neither squad could find the back of the net. BG sophomore defenseman Kyle Page would have the best effort, but his last second desperation slap shot couldn't find the open corner on the opposite side of the net, as the game went to overtime.
Bronco defenseman Chris Frank would get whistled for slashing then just 1:32 into the extra-frame to setup the final BG power play of the evening.
After going 0-6 in regulation with the man-advantage, the Falcons would make sure No. 7 on the night counted. Sophomore forward James Perkin was able to make a play deep in the right corner to get a shot on net and sitting there to collect the rebound off Gil's pad would be Solway, as the Green Bay, Wis. native became the fifth Falcon freshman to tally a point in the first four games. Perkin and Nesdill both picked up their first two assists of the season on the game-winning play.
"[James]Perkin made a nice play in the corner," Solway said of his game-winning score. "Their D man went over to help out, and Gill kicked the first shot out in front. I was just open in front of the net to tap it in."
The winning effort came after it seemed from the start, it would be an unlucky night for the Falcons. BG came out strong in the first period holding a 10-1 advantage in shots on net. However, the one shot that the Broncos would get would find the back of the net, as Cam Watson collected a power play tally with just 10 seconds remaining in the opening frame to give WMU a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
The play would start to even out in the second though, as the two teams both collected seven shots on the net in the second frame.
One of those seven chances for the Falcons would result in sophomore Tomas Petruska picking up his first marker of the year, as he picked up an unassisted marker at the 12:34 mark of the period to tie the game at 1-1.
After BG fought back to tie it in the second, the Broncos would once again take the lead back in the third. Freshman center Max Campbell would find the net on a wrist shot past BG freshman goaltender Nick Eno to make it 2-1 with just 12:12 remaining.
It would be the last tally of the night for the Broncos though, as Eno would go on to collect his second-career win in the contest, making 14 saves on 16 shots. His counterpart, Gill, would end his evening with 27 saves on 30 BG shots, as the Falcons held a final 30-16 advantage in shots on net.
The two squads would both tally a goal with the man-advantage then as BG finished the night 1-7, while the WMU power play finished 1-5.
The two teams will conclude their home-and-home series Saturday evening with a 7:05 p.m. face-off inside the BGSU Ice Arena. All the action can once again be heard by tuning into WBGU 88.1 FM with Danny Nieves bringing you all the play-by-play.
