Bowling Green State University head coach Gregg Brandon post-game quotes
Opening statement about the game ...
"I really appreciate the fans that showed up tonight, the ones that were there got to see a great Bowling Green win. We have one more home game and we need to pack this place for when the [University of Toledo] Rockets come in on Nov. 23."
On Anthony Turner `s deep pass ...
"It was a nice little play action that we had cooked up. We ran that play against them last year and he threw it to Corey Partridge over the middle and we got a pass interference called against us. It is a play that we have had for some time, and we just knew that it would work tonight.
"AT has really done a great job at accepting his role and that role is expanding. The way we used him tonight is the way we need to use him. For us to win that game without [WR] Corey Partridge and [RB] Willie Geter we had to have kids step up for us. I thought tonight that was huge on how we had players willing to do that. We have three games left and we have got to win them all if we want to go anywhere."
On [Linebacker] Glen Stanley ...
"He is a very active kid that can run. That number 7 [Carlton Jackson], he is allusive and Glen got his hooks on him when he got in and that really caught my attention. Glen has got to play now. He is a true freshman who has played all season, and now his role is going to be even more important."
On [QB] Tyler Sheehan ...
"I don't think that shoulder looked like it was bothering him tonight. I think he has kind of shrugged that off. He threw the ball very accurately tonight being 26-36. I thought the kids ran great routs and caught the ball for him. As always our line protected very well. That was a good defense. They were second in the conference in total defense coming in. That was a concern on being able to move the ball and score as often as we did. So that was a good job by our offensive coaches and players."
On preparing for the next game ...
"I don't know, we will see who shows up on Monday. We talked about getting off the roller coaster last week. So we will see."
On preparing for Akron's offense ...
"Jabari Arthur concerned us because he is such a big play guy and he got lose on us towards the end. We did a pretty good job containing him though; we designed a coverage that allowed us to get two on him almost the entire night and we did a good job executing that. Bryan Williams had shown really great speed and bursts and we wanted to try to keep him keep the ball in front of us. He is a really explosive guy but Jackson is really the only guy who hurt us. I didn't even expect Jackson to play. "
On the performance of the defense ...
"P.J. Mahone did a great job for us tonight. He got the interception for a touchdown, which was a nice play. That was at the start of the second half and just a huge play for us. It put the dagger in, so to speak. The touchback right before halftime was also a huge play. They had the momentum going down the field and if they had scored they would have had it going into halftime so that was huge."
Red-Shirt Junior QB, Anthony Turner
On how he has been wanting to throw a pass all year ...
"I don't think I begged him [Coach Gregg Brandon] enough. We finally threw one there because they know whenever we run that package we are going to run. We threw it in and got them to come up and threw the ball deep and threw a touch down."
On how important it was for the offense to score on the first drive ...
"Anytime the offense scores on the first drive that's always an attention getter for the defense to let them know we are here to play ball."
On his role tonight and the win ...
"It felt good to be involved with things but the offensive line and Tyler Sheehan made everything the way it was. They made their reads and took what the defense gave us. The offensive line made great blocks all night they sprang a couple but I didn't get to score.'
On blocking ...
"I tried it twice. The first time it didn't work to well but the second time I got him."
On the importance on starting November with a win and putting themselves in the positions they want to be in ...
"Coach always says that champions are crowned in November. If we can pull a couple more wins out in November I definitely think we will be crowned."
Sophomore DB, P.J. Mahone
On the interception to start the second half ...
"I think it definitely helped. We came in with a good package. Our coaches did a lot of film work and put us in good positions and that was the design of the play right there."
On the run back ...
"It was good blocking. All I saw was linemen ahead of me so I just tried to run around them."
On Glen Stanley filling in ...
"Glen came in and filled in nicely. I think it was his second play in he made a big hit on the quarterback when he tried to scramble. He is going to be a good player as a true freshman."
University of Akron head coach J.D. Brookhart post-game quotes
On team's performance ...
"With the way we were playing on offense and the way they were playing on defense we knew that we had to score touchdowns. Defensively we played tentative early on and we were back on our heels. We played, hard but we did not look like we were going all out".
On QB Carlton Jackson's performance ...
"He certainly did well running the football but struggled throwing. He was tentative. He looked like he wasn't stepping into a lot of the throws that he made. He obviously runs the ball well".
On turnovers and Jackson's fumble ...
"We had two turnovers inside the 30 in the first half. We had to make a decision to kick the field goal to close it to a two-touchdown game or to take another shot and then try a field goal. It was certainly a momentum swinger".
University of Akron QB Carlton Jackson post-game quotes
General game comments ...
"There are some things we could have done different to determine the outcome of the game. We came out, got in the red zone a few times and missed some opportunities. We didn't capitalize, and it came back to haunt us in the end. Hats off to the Bowling Green offense."
On BG defense ...
"They played well. We really hurt ourselves when we didn't execute. When the times presented themselves in the red zone, we couldn't capitalize."
What you [the team] could have done better ...
"What I could have done better is step up in the pocket and step in to my throws. Thinking back to the game I really made some throws I didn't step into and the balls kind of floated. As an offense, I think we played well as a whole; from my stand point, I could have done things better to determine the outcome of the game."
On BGSU QB Tyler Sheehan's play ...
"Bowling Green has a great offense. They came out and executed. I don't doubt our defense, but it happens. It was just one of those nights. They played well and hussled hard. We had a nice week of practice, but sometimes things turn for the worse; I guess that just happens."
