Election Day: Falcons Still Receiving Votes
Though they have yet to break into the top 25, the Falcons are still catching the eye of pollsters in the USA Today/ESPN Division I Top 25 Coaches' Poll ... for the second consecutive week of the regular season BGSU has received votes from a poll of head coaches across the nation ... the Orange and Brown continues to be the only Mid-American Conference school to be mentioned on the list ... future opponent Iowa State also picked up 20 votes in the latest poll while Notre Dame advanced one spot to 24th overall ... last week the Cyclones received seven votes and the Fighting Irish were 25th ... Iowa State also received a vote in the AP poll while the Fighting Irish are ranked 23rd for the second straight week... a MAC program has yet to be recognized on the AP list in 2007.
You Are My Sunshine ...
Bowling Green has now beaten back-to-back Atlantic Sun Conference affiliates with their W's at Lipscomb (54-42, Nov. 15) and Belmont (77-66, Nov. 18) ... Belmont is the defending champion of the league and was slated to finish third in the preseason coaches poll ... next, the Falcons will face Florida Gulf Coast University on Nov. 30 in Ithaca, N.Y. and have the chance to face Gardner-Webb on Dec. 1 in the same tournament hosted by Cornell University ... prior to the Nashville trip, the Falcons had never faced an Atlantic Sun member under head coach Curt Miller ... Miller's Falcons are currently 2-0 against the conference.
You're the Only Ten I See ...
While the joke may be for the Falcons to join the Atlantic Sun as a result of this season's non-conference scheduling, they may also want to relocate to Nashville, Tennessee ... dating back to the 2006 season, of the past four Falcon wins, BGSU has beat Vanderbilt (59-56, Mar. 20), Lipscomb (54-42, Nov. 15) and Belmont (77-66, Nov. 18); each of the schools' campuses are located within close proximity to the other in Nashville ... the Falcons are 3-4 all-time against programs located in Tennessee and are 3-0 under head coach Curt Miller when facing the Volunteer State ... BGSU has beaten the state of Tennessee by an average of nine points under Miller.
Winning Five and Stayin' Alive
Since taking over the reins of the BG women's basketball program, head coach Curt Miller's Falcons are 5-2 in the road opener ... after beating Youngstown State 71-61 in 2001, BG beat Florida Atlantic (77-62, Dec. 6) then dropped a pair to YSU (79-67, Nov. 22, 2003) and Ohio State (89-41, Nov. 12, 2004) ... in the last two seasons, BGSU has beat IUPUI (66-55, Nov. 25, 2005) and Detroit (68-37, Nov. 10, 2006) en route to winning their first games at home and away sites ... this season, BGSU beat Valparaiso (81-56, Nov. 9) at home and Lipscomb (54-42, Nov. 15) on the road giving the Falcons their third straight season winning their first game at home and on the road.
Glancing at the MAC
After two weeks of play, Bowling Green is currently one of two MAC teams to win all three of their games ... Eastern Michigan is also a perfect 3-0 ... in the East, Buffalo (3-1) is followed by Miami (2-1) and Akron (1-2) while Ohio (0-1) and Kent State (0-3) have yet to find wins ... in the West, the directional schools are king as Eastern Michigan (3-0) is atop the division while Northern Illinois (2-1) sits ahead of Central Michigan (2-2) and Western Michigan (2-2) ... Ball State and Toledo each have a win and two losses.
Falcons Bring Home Back-to-Back MAC East POW's
Per an announcement from the Mid-American Conference office in downtown Cleveland, senior captain Kate Achter has been selected as the league's co-outstanding player in the East Division for the third time in her career ... Amanda Jackson of Miami was also recognized this week ... Achter is the second Falcon in as many weeks to earn the award. Last week, which was also the first possible week for the award, junior captain Lindsey Goldsberry won.
Goldsberry Earns Another MAC Honor
The Mid-American Conference has announced Lindsey Goldsberry, a junior guard on the women's basketball team, has been selected as the MAC Female Scholar Athlete of the Week for the week of Nov. 15, 2007 ... four days prior to winning the SAW award, Goldsberry was named the women's basketball MAC East Player of the Week.
Low Points Can Still Equal Big Wins
The 54 points the Falcons used to over Lipscomb, 54-42, were not only the fewest points scored in a non-conference win under head coach Curt Miller, but were also the fewest points scored in any win during the Miller era (2001-present) ... in the past seven seasons, BGSU has won three games with as little as 57 points scored in Mid-American Conference play ... in 2002, BG beat Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, 57-56, while in 2004 they beat rival Toledo in their own arena, 57-54 ... most recently, BGSU beat Central Michigan in Mount Pleasant, Mich., 57-52 ... also of note from the Lipscomb scoreboard, the last time the Falcons held an opponent under 50 points was at the University at Buffalo on Feb. 17, 2007 ... the Bulls scored just 44 points on their home court as the Falcons took the MAC road match, 85-44 ... since Miller took over the Falcons, BGSU has held their opponent at, or below, the half century mark a total of 27 times and are 26-1 when doing so.
Don't Let Them Score ...
Under head coach Curt Miller, the Falcons have held 17 opponents at or below 50 points as the final buzzer sounds on 27 separate occasions ... breaking down that number, seven are MAC schools while 10 were non-conference match-ups ... BGSU has held both Akron and Buffalo an opponent high four times to 50 points or less ... including the stop at Lipscomb, BGSU forced 13 games to see 45 points or less from their opponent ... eight of the 13 games were on the road.
...Ok, We Won't Let Them Score
In holding Lipscomb to 27.1 percent from the field, the Falcon defense held the Lady Bisons to the fifth lowest shooting percentage under head coach Curt Miller ... of the Falcons low scoring efforts, four have been on the road while a total of three have come from non-conference opponents.
Leaders of the Flock
In the two previous tests in which the Falcons have played in, BG has led from buzzer to buzzer but Belmont went on to lead the Falcons by as many as six points for a span of nearly eight minutes on their home court inside the Curb Event Center ... freshman Lauren Prochaska helped the Falcons chip away at the BU lead connecting first on a three-point field-goal from the right wing and then two free throws on the following possession ... the lead would change a total of four times and was tied once in the match-up; all five events occurred in the first 10 minutes of the game.
Giese and Slagle Officially Ink With Falcons
Bowling Green State University women's basketball head coach Curt Miller has announced the signing of Maribeth Giese (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Jess Slagle (Sidney, Ohio) to National Letters of Intent ... the pair of current high school seniors will join the Orange and Brown in the upcoming 2008-09 academic year ... Giese and Slagle, a pair of Ohio natives, will be the future of the BGSU women's basketball program as they replace yet another duo from the Buckeye State, seniors Kate Achter and Whitney Taylor ... currently, Achter and Taylor are only the second class in Falcon women's basketball history to win MAC Tournament championships in their first three seasons with the program.
1,000-Point Club Status
Senior Kate Achter, who entered the season with 1,086 points and ranking 18th on the all-time career scoring list, has recently surpassed Stefanie Wenzel (1,099, 2000-04) and is now 17th on the list with 1,134 points ... she is just 29 points away from tying Andrea Nordman's (89-93) 1,164 points ... Nordman is currently in the 16th overall slot ... last season Achter became the seventh player under head coach Curt Miller to score 1,000-plus points ... three of his former players rank in the top five ... recently Achter averaged 21.5 ppg in a pair of road games ... she also reset her career high with 29 points at Belmont.
Golden Arches
Junior Lindsey Goldsberry entered the season 10th on the all-time BGSU career three-point field-goal percentage list making 35-of-97 (.361) shots from behind the arc in her first two seasons ... after making 5-of-6 against Valparaiso and another at Belmont (1-1) she has a 66.7 percent accuracy from `downtown' and has made at least one long ball in two of three Falcon games this season ... historically she is 41-106 (.387) and currently tied for sixth on the all-time percentage list.
Uhl Might Want to Keep Her Off the Boards ...
Freshman reserve Jennifer Uhl currently leads all Falcon post-players nabbing 14 boards this season ... she is second on the team only to Lindsey Goldsberry who has pulled down 22 ... Uhl is averaging 4.7 rebounds per game and recently raked in a career high eight at Belmont; Goldsberry was the team high rebounder with nine that game ... six of her eight boards at Belmont were in the first half.
Celebrate your Birthday with a ... Turkey?
In case the thought of a birthday celebration around the Thanksgiving turkey does not sound appealing the Falcons will have the opportunity to give assistant coach Brandi Poole a belated birthday gift with a home win over St. Bonaventure ... Poole will celebrate her D.O.B on Thursday, Nov. 22.
The Opponent - St. Bonaventure
Jim Crowley's Bonnies of St. Bonaventure are currently riding a 5-0 season and have equaled the program record for most victories to begin a season previously owned by the 2005-06 squad ... three of the Bonnies wins have come at home while just one was on the road and the other was played at a neutral site ... Dana Mitchell has led SBU to each of their victories as the leading scorer and is averaging 19.2 ppg ... in 2007, she has yet to score less than 16 points in a contest ... three other Bonnies are averaging 10.4 ppg ... Mitchell is one of two remaining starters from last seasons' squad that went 16-15 ... that team gave SBU their first winning season since 1997-98 ... they also posted 10 non-conference wins ... the Bonnies have already beaten MAC foe Kent State (74-68, Nov. 11) ... the Falcons will be the second and final league opponent for St. Bona ... Tiara Johnson will need to be kept away from the basket as she is averaging a team high 7.2 rebounds per game ... Mitchell is a close second with 7.0 rpg ... six Bonnies will enter the contest averaging between 21-32 minutes per game ... BGSU is 2-1 all time versus the Bonnies ... under head coach Curt Miller, the Falcons are 1-0.
