Vrvilo Named MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Kicker Sinisa Vrvilo has been named MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week for his efforts in the Falcons 44-20 win over Akron last Friday night as announced by the conference office on Friday (Nov. 9) afternoon.
Against the Zips, Vrvlio connected on kicks of 31, 28, and 25 yards with his only miss coming from 52 yards; a kick that hit off the crossbar. He was also 5-of-5 on extra point attempts.
In handling kick off duties, he and the Falcons held the Zips to a 16.0 yard average for the night - Akron entered the contest atop the MAC with a 25.3 yard average.
The junior also doubled as the MAC Special Teams Player of the Week this week.
With the award, Vrvilo becomes the second member of the squad to earn SAW honors; receiver Marques Parks was the Week 1 winner (Sept. 6). He is also the third male student-athlete to receive recognition from the conference for his work on the playing field and in the classroom. Additionally, he is the second consecutive BGSU male student-athlete to win.
The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during that week's competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.

CLEVELAND, OH-- Bowling Green's Sinisa Vrvilo (football) was named the MAC Male Scholar Athlete of the Week on November 8, 2007.
Vrvilo (kicker, Jr. 3.46, human development, Ft. Worth, Texas) was 3-of-4 on field goal attempts in the Falcons 44-20 win over Akron. Buffalo: Mike Ragusa (wrestling, 174 pounds, Jr., 3.223, communication, Foxboro, Mass.) won four matches on his way to the 174-pound weight class victory at the UB Open on Sunday. Ragusa defeated Don Ross of Clarion, 9-3, in the championship match. The title was Ragusa's second consecutive at the UB Open as he won the 165-pound title in 2006 and finished last season with an overall record of 18-17.
Eastern Michigan: Charlie Pienaar (wrestling, Sr., 3.84, physical education, Trafford, Penn.) went 2-2 at 174 pounds in the EMU Open, Saturday, Nov. 3, hosted by EMU. Pienaar won his first match by a pin and followed up with a 2-0 decision in his second match. He then lost his next two matches to finish the tournament with a 2-2 mark.
Miami: Joey Hudson (football, linebacker, Jr., 3.17, exercise science/management and organization, Piqua, Ohio) led the Miami defense as the RedHawks amassed an impressive 10.0 tackles for loss, including six sacks, as a team. Hudson led the RedHawks with 2.5 tackles for a loss of 13 yards and was credited with a sack for a loss of 10 yards. He compiled 10 tackles against the Bulls, including eight solo stops. His efforts spearheaded Miami to a 31-28 win against Buffalo to lift the RedHawks into a first-place tie in the East Division and handing the Bulls their first East Division loss of the season.
Northern Illinois: Kyle Knotek (soccer, defender, So., 4.0, business, Geneva, Ill.) started in NIU's conference finale against Bowling Green. He has started in 14 games for the Huskies this season. Knotek assisted Northern Illinois' game-winning goal in a 1-0 triumph over Oregon State. He tallied two assists on the year.
Buffalo's Vescio named MAC Female Scholar Athlete
CLEVELAND, OH-- Buffalo's Andrea Vescio (soccer) was named the MAC Female Scholar Athlete of the Week on November 8, 2007.
Vescio (F/M, Jr., 3.968, management, Niagara Falls, Ontario) scored two goals in a 3-0 win against Kent State on Thursday after being named to the 2007 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District I University Division Women's Soccer Second Team earlier in the day. Vescio finished the 2007 season as the team leader in points (17) and goals (6).

Akron: Elizabeth Martin (volleyball, outside hitter, So., 3.76, graphic design, Lowell, Ind.) averaged 3.75 kills and 1.88 digs per game while hitting a respectable .221 last weekend as the Zips split a pair of home matches against Buffalo (W, 3-0) and Ball State (L, 2-3). The sophomore posted 11 kills, five digs and three blocks in UA's straight sets victory Friday night and notched her team-leading ninth double-double of the season with a match-high 19 kills and 13 digs in a tough five-game defeat Saturday. Overall, the graphic design major has started every match this season and is second on the team with 257 kills.
Bowling Green: Kendra Halm (volleyball, middle-blocker, Jr. 3.30, criminal justice, Bucyrus, Ohio) led the Falcons once again this weekend as they went 1-1 with a win over Kent State (3-2) and lost to No. 16 Ohio (0-3). Halm and the Falcons started with a 3-2 victory over Kent State. Halm led the Falcons, recording 22 kills, hitting a .356 and picking up five blocks in the win over the Golden Flashes. Despite a loss to No. 16 Ohio Halm led the Falcons with 19 kills and only two errors hitting a .586 and three blocks. For the weekend Halm totaled 41 kills averaging 5.12 kills per game and hitting a .446. Halm recorded eight blocks, averaging 1.00 block per game. Halm also had five digs, one assist and 46.0 points for the weekend. She was honored this week with a MAC POW award.
Eastern Michigan: Madeleine Pilchard (swimming, 3.91, accounting, Marietta, Ga.) won three individual events and swam on two winning relays as the Eagles split a pair of Mid-American Conference dual meets Friday and Saturday. On Friday, Pilchard won the 200-yard freestyle (1:53.44) and the 100-yard freestyle (:54.11) and was part of the winning 400-yard medley relay in a 154-134 dual-meet win at home against Bowling Green. On Saturday, Pilchard won the 200-yard freestyle (1:54.09) and was on the winning 400-yard freestyle relay in a 181-119 dual-meet loss to Toledo. Miami: Danielle Gaynor (field hockey, midfielder, Jr., 3.66, management and organization/sports studies, San Diego, Calif.) was named to the MAC All-Tournament team after scoring two goals in the RedHawks' run to the championship game of the 2007 tournament. The native of San Diego, California scored once in Miami's 3-2 win over second-seeded Kent State and deflected in a score against the No. 15 Ohio Bobcats in the championship game. Also a second-team All-MAC selection, Gaynor ended her junior campaign with six goals and four assists. A double major in management and organization, and sport studies, Gaynor maintains a 3.66 GPA.
Northern Illinois: Lindsey Curnock (soccer, goalkeeper, So., 3.81, psychology, Batavia, Ill.) posted a pair of shutouts during the week, blanking Western Michigan 1-0 to clinch the No. 3 seed in the MAC Tournament, and a 1-0 whitewashing of Ohio in the MAC Quarterfinal. She equaled the school season record with her eighth shutout of the season and extended her school career record to 15. Curnock improved her record to 8-4-3 on the season and collected her third career MAC Tournament shutout. She has shutout five of the last six opponents this season.
Toledo: Shannon Hazelton (swimming and diving, So., 3.569, middle childhood education, Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario) won five individual races and was part of two relay team winners in the Rockets' two victories over Ball State and Eastern Michigan. Hazelton won the 100 and 200 butterfly in both events.
Western Michigan: Kerstin Pahl (tennis, Jr., 3.69, business, Kiel Germany) won the Gold Singles Championship at the WMU Super Challenge defeating a nationally ranked player with scores 6-3, 6-2. Her five overall wins of the weekend gave her 129 in her career. Pahl gave the women's tennis team one of its first fall tournament championships in the past several seasons.
