TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Gabe Moore scored 19 points, including a 9-of-10 effort from the free-throw line, as host Indiana State University held off the Bowling Green State University men's basketball team, 62-57, Saturday afternoon (Dec. 22). The non-conference game was held at the Hulman Center.
With the win, the Sycamores even their record at 5-5 on the season, while dropping the Falcons to 4-6. ISU has concluded the non-league portion of the 2007-08 schedule, while BGSU has two non-conference contests remaining before diving into the Mid-American Conference slate.
Junior Darryl Clements led the Falcons with 12 points on Saturday, while three of his teammates scored 10 points apiece. Junior Nate Miller and freshmen Joe Jakubowski and Chris Knight each joined Clements in double digits.
For the Sycamores, Marico Stinson had 17 points to join Moore in twin figures.
The Falcons scored the first five points of the afternoon, and BGSU took an 8-2 lead with two-and-a-half minutes gone. Miller opened the game's scoring with a three-point play in the first minute, and Jakubowski hit a driving layup for a 5-0 lead. When the freshman connected on a long three-point field goal at the 17:35 mark, the Brown and Orange led by six points.
The Sycamores, in the person of Stinson, came right back. Stinson hit a jumper, then a three-pointer, to cut the lead to 8-7. Stinson scored the home team's first seven points of the day.
The hosts took the lead before Jakubowski took a pass from junior Brian Moten and hit another triple for an 11-9 BG advantage. But, the Sycamores would score the game's next eight points, holding the Falcons scoreless for the next four minutes.
During that 8-0 run, Aaron Carter and Moore each hit from long range, as the hosts took a 17-11 lead. With the Sycamores bidding to extend the lead, sophomore Otis Polk swatted back-to-back ISU shots to keep the Falcons' deficit at six heading into a media timeout.
Out of that timeout, Moten got a defensive rebound, and connected with classmate Clements on a nifty play at the other end. Moten spotted a cutting Clements at the back door for an easy layup, and the Falcons' deficit was four points.
The Sycamores, however, scored the next four points to double the lead, before Knight followed a teammate's miss, grabbing the rebound and hitting a reverse layup. The hosts scored again to take a 23-15 lead, then got the ball back and headed in on a 3-on-1 break. But, Miller took a charge for an ISU offensive foul with eight minutes left in the half.
A free throw by ISU's Jay Tunnell was the game's only scoring in a span of over four minutes. Clements finally broke that streak with a jumper at the 3:35 mark, and when Polk hit a spinning layup off a Jakubowski pass, the BG deficit was 25-20 with 1:51 left in the half.
After an ISU hoop, Moten pulled up for a jumper on the break, and the Sycamores' lead again was five points in the final minute of the half. The home team worked the clock on the ensuing possession, and Moore connected on a long jumper in the final seconds to give ISU a 29-22 lead at the break.
In that first half, the Falcons had a field-goal percentage of 45.0 percent to the Sycamores' 39.3%. But, BGSU had 10 turnovers in the half to ISU's four.
After each team turned the ball over to begin the second half, Miller scored on a putback to open the scoring. But, Moore hit a three-pointer and Stinson converted a turnaround jumper, and for the first time all day, the ISU lead was double digits, at 34-24.
Sophomore Marc Larson hit a follow shot, and several minutes later, Clements hit a three-pointer with a defender's hand in his face as the shot-clock buzzer sounded. After a driving, spinning layup by Clements at the 12:46 mark, the Falcons trailed by five points, 36-31.
Miller continued the run, swooping in to tip in a teammate's miss, and with 12 minutes left, the Brown and Orange trailed by just three points.
The teams traded hoops, with Moten answering an Adam Arnold layup with a pull-up jumper. But, Harry Marshall's three-pointer upped the home team's lead to six points, at 41-35.
Miller responded with a driving layup in traffic, midway through the half, and when Knight hit a layup after a near-turnover for the Falcons, BG was within two points, 41-39, with nine minutes remaining.
Again, however, the hosts responded, with a Tunnell triple. A turnaround jumper from Knight kept the Falcons within four points, 45-41, but the hosts then would go on an 8-0 run. That run culminated with a steal that led to a breakaway dunk by Todd McCoy. Suddenly, the Sycamores' lead was 12 points, 53-41, with just five minutes left. The Falcons, though, would not go away quietly.
BG would score seven points in the span of just 70 seconds. Miller split a pair of free throws, and an offensive rebound after the miss led to a layup by Knight. After a missed jumper, the Falcons got the ball back, and a Polk putback cut the lead to seven points with 3:39 left.
The Falcons employed a full-court press, and got a quick steal deep in ISU's end of the court. Knight stole the ball and found a cutting Moten for a layup and a 53-48 game with 3:27 remaining.
The Falcons were whistled for a foul, but Marshall missed the front end of a one-and-one opportunity. BG came right back downcourt and Knight hit a floater in the lane. The BG run was 9-0, and the ISU lead was just 53-50 with 3:04 on the clock.
Two Moore free throws were the only scoring for the next two-plus minutes, as the Falcons missed four field-goal attempts and four free-throw tries during that time. Moore got back to the line and hit two more charity tosses with 40 seconds left.
Jakubowski raced downcourt and hit a layup, before a pair of Tunnell tosses restored the hosts' seven-point lead with 31 seconds remaining. A Clements three-pointer with 17.4 seconds on the clock got BG to within 59-55, but BG could get no closer. ISU made 7-of-10 free throws in those final 40 seconds, enough to get the home win.
For the game, the Falcons shot 46.3% to the Sycamores' 43.5%, and BGSU held a 35-28 rebounding advantage. The Falcons, though, committed 17 turnovers to ISU's 12, and the hosts attempted 24 free throws (making 16) to BG's nine (making three).
In addition to his 19 points, Moore had five rebounds, seven assists and seven steals, leading all players in the latter two categories and tying for team honors in rebounding.
The Falcons had three players with more than five rebounds. Miller had a game-high eight boards, while Knight and Polk had seven apiece. Polk had five points, seven boards and a pair of blocks in 25 minutes of action.
Moten scored six points on the day, while Larson had four. Jakubowski led the Falcons with four assists.
The Falcons now take a break for the Christmas holiday, before opening a season-long three-game homestand next Saturday night (Dec. 29). BG will host Eastern Illinois in a 7:00 p.m. tipoff at venerable Anderson Arena.
