BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Tonight the Bowling Green State University gymnastics team held their annual Brown vs. Orange intra-squad scrimmage. While it was a very close competition, the Brown team edged out the Orange team, 113.95-113.65. The scores were based on the top three performances from each of the four events.
Head coach Kerrie Beach was really proud of her team's performances. "The team did a great job tonight. I was really happy with their level of confidence, and their ability to hit their routines. We had a few nervous mistakes, but this is a great opportunity to learn from our mistakes before our season starts," she said.
Besides being the first night that the fans got to see the new coaching staff in action, they were also able to see the team's nine new members. Eight new freshmen made their debut, including one transfer. Beach was very pleased with her freshmen. "Kasey Fillmore did a great job for us on bars, and in all the other events. Meg Satterlee had a strong beam and floor, and we are really looking forward to her helping us out this season. Bre {Guy} is going to be a pinch hitter for us. She is going to be in the all-around, and someone who we can count on to hit continuously night in and night out."
In most of the events the freshmen led the pack. On vault, sophomore transfer Breanne Guy set the pace and scored a 9.700. She was followed by Meg Satterlee, who recorded a 9.450, and Kasey Fillmore who finished with a 9.400. The Brown team won the vault with a score of 27.900. The Orange squad was not far behind with a 27.750.
Fillmore landed a 9.700 on the bars while Guy and freshman Michelle Luchini followed with a 9.600. Freshman Lexi Psichopaidas recorded a 9.550. Sophomore Amber Brewer made her debut after a season ending ACL injury last year by recording a 9.400. After two events, the Brown team obtained a small lead, 56.650-55.600.
Sophomore Megan Chronister picked up where she left off last season by finishing first on beam with a score of 9.750. Luchini, Satterlee, and junior Katie Follett tied for second place with a score of 9.700. Sophomore Queenita Gamble and junior Jenna Wirtanen placed fifth and sixth respectively, with scores of 9.650 and 9.550. Beam had the highest scores on the night as the Orange finished with a 29.150 and Brown posted a 28.700.
The floor routines rounded out the competition. Gamble lit the mats up and landed a 9.750. Kasey and Guy each recorded a 9.600 to place them in second. Satterlee finished fourth with a 9.550. Luchini, Chronister and Abigail Ashley all recorded scores of 9.500.
Senior Marissa Saneholtz was also very pleased with how her teammates preformed and said there is a lot they can learn from this meet. "This meet just shows where we are right now and how much work we need to do over break. We just need to get more consistent in our routines so that everyone can compete."
Following the scrimmage, the Falcons will have some time to work out the kinks, as their first home meet is on January 12, 2008. This meet will be against the University of Missouri inside Eppler Complex at 7:00 p.m. The team will stay home for the following week as they host their first Mid-American Conference meet against Eastern Michigan. This meet will also start at 7:00 p.m. inside the Eppler Complex.
"Before our first home meet we just need to work on the little things." head coach Kerrie Beach said. "The routines are there, we need to beef up our vault line-up, and just working out the very little things. It's going to be important for us to start every routine at a 10.0 so we can get the highest score possible."
