The women's track and field team, of first year head coach Cami Wells will open the outdoor season this weekend as they travel to Toledo, Ohio, to compete in the Rocket Team Challenge. A handful of athletes will travel with Wells to Palo Alto, Calif., to compete in the Stanford Track and Field Invitational.
The Falcons are coming off a very successful indoor campaign. They saw their first MAC Champion (Jamie Roflow, 5,000) in either the indoor or outdoor seasons since 2005 when Kerri McClung won the shot put.
Up next...
As stated above, most of the Falcons will travel to Toledo, Ohio, to compete at the Rocket Team Challenge. The Orange and Brown will face many of their MAC foes, including, Toledo, Eastern Michigan, Central Michigan, Western Michigan, Kent State, Northern Illinois, Ball State and non-conference opponent Oakland University. The field events will start at noon with the hammer throw, high jump and pole vault.
Sprinting into spring...
The sprints and hurdles look to continue their success into the outdoor season and are led by seniors Jessica White and Nicole Standback. White finished fourth in both the 60-meter dash and the 200-meter dash. It was the second year in a row in which she placed in the top-eight at the Indoor MAC Championships. White finished third last year in the 100-meter dash at the Outdoor Championships and looks to better herself in both the 100 and 200-meters.
Standback proved that she was going to go out at the top of her game during her senior year and she did just that this past indoor season. After finishing third in the 60-meter hurdles as a freshman, seventh as a sophomore, and third as a junior, the senior finished second in the event to claim the silver medal.
Anyone for the 10K??
The middle distance/ distance corp., led by junior Roflow, senior Kim Settle, and sophomore Yemoja Marotta will look to continue to build off the indoor season. All three placed in the top-eight in their individual event at the conference meet and are expected to continue to perform well during the outdoor season. As mentioned, Roflow won the 5,000-meter at the championships while Marotta finished seventh in the 800-meters and Settle finished eighth in the mile.
What do you get when you add a basketball star to an already great mix?
Takarra Dunning will lead the throws during the outdoor campaign. Dunning was the seventh place finisher in the shot put at the MAC Championships. She also threw a three-foot personal-record this past indoor season and looks to continue to improve. Andi Bunko, who competed in her first indoor season, will also join her in the throws, but what she truly excels at is the javelin where she has been a top-eight palcer for the past three seasons for the Orange and Brown. Joining Bunko and Dunning will be successful discus thrower Lauren Bryant and also senior Paris Bussey and sophomore Stacey Turak. After taking the past two seasons off, the Falcons will see the return of Liz Honegger, the 2004 discus champion.
Leaps and bounds...
Senior Erica Wilson heads the jumps. Joining her will be Sharonda Alexander and Amanda Sefcik. Wilson has been very successful over the years for the
Falcons. Last spring she jumped a personal-best in the high jump, 5-08.00.
Banquet date set...
