Track and Cross Country Announces 12 Member Recruiting Class

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Bowling Green State University head cross country and track and field coach Cami Wells and her staff, Clive Roberts and Justin Carvalho have announced the addition of 12 to the cross country and track programs. Heather Conger (South Euclid, Ohio/ Brush), Rachel Doughty (Bay Village, Ohio/ Bay), Meghan Gill (Clyde, Ohio/Clyde), Sarah Hooten (Newport, Mich./ Carleton Airport), Megan Kelsey (Kettering, Ohio/ Fairmont), Katie Manocchio (Mansfield, Ohio/ Crestview), Emily Mays (Bellevue, Ohio/ Bellevue), Brittani McNeal (Romeoville, Ill./ Romeoville), Barbara Powers (Bowling Green, Ohio/ Bowling Green), Elizabeth Stone (Detroit, Mich./ Regina), Courtney Krummert (Milford, Ohio/ Milford) and Alexis Warren (Solon, Ohio/ Solon).
Heather Conger South Euclid, OH, Brush High School
Has personal bests of 25.8 for 200m, 56.7 for 400m, 2:18 for 800m and 18:48 for 5000m. Holds school records in the 800m, 3200m, 5000m, and is also a member of the school record 4 X 200m, 4 X 400m and 4 X 800m relay teams. Was named Western Reserve Conference First Team in the 400m, 800m, Cross Country and as a member of the 4 X 400m relay. 2005 District Champion, WRC girls track North Division MVP, All-Ohio 2005 and 2006, Finished 13th at the DI Ohio State Cross Country Championships, earning All-Ohio honors. Was selected as one of the top senior cross country runners in Ohio and represented Team Ohio in the Mid East meet of Champions in Kettering, Ohio this past fall. Named Girls Cross Country Athlete of the Year by the New Herald. Heather is also a member of her high school basketball team where she earned WRC first team All-Academic Basketball honors as well as WRC Honorable Mention basketball. Heather has earned a total of 10 varsity letters in basketball, cross country and track. Daughter of Carla and Roy Wainwright and Daniel Conger, high school coaches are James Hoover, Dave Englander, Edward Huffmeier, Brenda Ciccarello, Byron Hopkins, and Eric Mitchel.
"I initially recruited Heather based on her strong track performances in the 200 through 800m but soon realized this fall that Heather was also an outstanding cross country athlete," said Wells. "It is very rare to find an athlete who can run 25.8 for 200m and also run 18:48 for 5000m. Heather's natural ability combined with her desire to succeed makes her the type of athlete who will be able to make an immediate impact in the MAC conference and beyond."
Rachel Doughty Bay Village, OH, Bay High School
In her junior year, Rachael placed third in the 100-meter hurdles in the Division II state meet with a time of 14.90. Indoor 2007 she ran the second fastest 55-meter hurdle time in Division II, 8.56, and was also ranked 12th in the state in Division II in the 55-meter dash, 7.63. Rachel`s high school activities include performing in the school musical and the marching band dance team. Daughter of Howard and Debbie Doughty, high school track coach is Kirsten Millet, plans to major in visual communications and film production.
"Rachel is quiet but shows the determination that you like to see in the hurdle event," said Roberts. "She works hard and is willing do whatever it takes to be better. I believe that Rachel will be able to make a easy transition to college competition."
"We are excited to have Rachel on board and will look to her to help carry on the strong tradition that has been built by Nicole Standback and Alicia Taylor in the short hurdles over the past seven years," said Wells.
Meghan Gill Clyde, OH, Clyde High School
Meghan was the 2005 Ohio State Champion in the Div II high jump and owns a personal best of 5'7". Meghan has been a key member of the Clyde high school volleyball and basketball teams. She has earned ten varsity letters while at Clyde High School and has been a member of the academic honor roll. Daughter of Joe and Cheryl Gill, high school track coach is Mike Martin.
"Meghan is an athlete that we will look to come in right away and be star for us," said Roberts. "She seems willing to do all the little things to be better. Meghan has that classic high jump frame that we all look for."
"Meghan is a proven big meet performer and has been consistent as one of the top high jumpers in the state during her high school careers," said Wells. "Meghan's competitiveness and athleticism are evident every time I have seen her jump. "
Sarah Hooten Newport, Mich., Carleton Airport High School
Sarah has a personal best of 7.46 for 55m, 12.1 in the 100m and 26.1 in the 200m. Sarah is the school record holder in the 100 and as a member of the 4 X 200m relay. She was voted most valuable player in 2004 and 2006 for her high school team. Won the regional meet in the 100m in 2006. State qualifier in the 100m, 4 X 100m relay and 4 X 200m relay in 2004. Was first team in the Huron League in 2006. Captain of the track team 2006 and 2007. She also played varsity volleyball for two years. Sarah has is also a member of the Airport High School basketball team where she served as captain and earner first team Huron League and All-Region honors. One of Sarah's basketball coaches was coached by former Falcon basketball standout Casey McDowell. Daughter of Joy and William Hooten, high school track coach is Rick Grant and AAU track coach is James Hall, plans to major in nursing.
"I believe Sarah has the ability to be one of the best in this conference for years to come," said Roberts. "Sarah displays the work ethic that I look for in an athlete. The big upside for Sarah is that she is so young in the sports that wear and tear that you see in incoming freshmen is not there."
"Sarah is well rounded athlete who has a tremendous inner drive and those qualities will lead her to a successful future in track and field," said Wells.
Megan Kelsey Kettering, OH, Kettering Fairmount High School
Megan has run personal bests of 5:18 for 1600m, 11:39 for 3200m and 19:01 for 5000m. Megan is an excellent student earning a 4.0 GPA and earning the scholar athlete award, as well as All-Ohio academic honors. She will graduate as the valedictorian of her class. Megan is also a member of the national honor society. Daughter of David & Lisa Kelsey, high school coach is Steve Hippenmeyer, plans to major in elementary education.
"Megan is just a great young woman; she is cheerful and determined to get the most she can out of every area of her life," said Wells. "I know Megan will be a positive addition to our cross country and track and field teams not only because of her running ability but also because of her personality."
Katie Manocchio Mansfield, Ohio, Crestview High School
Katie has a personal best of 40'11.75" in the shot put and 111' in the discus. Will have earned a 4 yr. varsity letter in track as a thrower, and is a 3 yr. letter winner in both basketball & soccer when she graduates from Crestview this spring. Katie has won several shot put championships this spring including the Mehock Relays, Bucyrus Invitational, & Crestview Invitational. Katie was also the recipient of WMFD Scholar Athlete Award. 2006 Conference Champion in the shot put, placed 5th in the Northwest Regional with a throw of 40'0.25", Times-Gazette 1st Team All-Area Athlete - thrower 2006 & 2005, 2006 Wendy's Heisman Athlete Nominee, 1st Team All-Academic in track, basketball, & soccer 2006, 2005, & 2004. Selected team captain and recipient of 2007 Coaches Award for Basketball. Member of two basketball Sectional Championship Teams in 2007 & 2005, and Goalie for the 2004 Soccer District Runner-Up Team. Katie is also a member of the National Honor Society and currently ranked #1 in her class, with an overall GPA of 4.0 Daughter of Tony and Mary Jo Manocchio. Katie has three brothers: Tony, Andrew, & Nicholas, high school track coach is Bob Staley, plans to major in Pre-Medicine.
"I am very excited about being a BGSU Falcon and joining Coach Wells, Coach Carvalho, and the Falcon family. I look forward to helping the team in anyway I can," said Manocchio
"Katie has everything I look for in an athlete, I'm looking forward to developing her as a thrower," said Carvalho.
"Katie's academic and athletic accomplishments speak for themselves. She is just a quality person in every sense of the word and will be a great addition to an already strong throwing squad.," said Wells
Emily Mays
Bellevue, OH, Bellevue Senior High School
Has a personal best of 5'5" in the high jump. Was the Ohio State Runner up in the DII high jump in 2005. She also played volleyball and basketball while at Bellevue. Daughter of Steve and Lori Mays, high school coach is Earl Miller.
"Emily is very driven to succeed, has that no quit attitude that you look for in an athlete," said Roberts. "Primarily high jump in high school but is so athletic that may be call upon to do some other things."
"Emily is a very versatile athlete who has excelled in several sports while attending Bellevue High School," said Wells. "I believe Emily will be a major contributor for us in the high jump as well as other event areas."
Brittani McNeal Romeoville, IL, Romeoville High School
School record holder in the long jump, 18'2, and the triple jump, 38'3.75. SICA North Conference record holder in the long jump, 17'9, and triple jump, 37'4. Placed 7th at the 2006 IHSA State Meet. Illinois Prep Top Times 2007 placed 4th in the indoor state meet in the long jump. 2006 outdoor national qualifier in the triple jump and the 4 x 100m relay. Captain of both the basketball and track team, has earned 7 varsity letters, 2 time MVP for both Track and Basketball. Two year National Honors Society Member, nominee for the 2007 IHSA All-Academic team, was selected for the "Who excel award" for outstanding female athlete in School District. Has personal best times of 12.3 in the 100m, 59.7 in the 400m, and 47.2 in the 300m Low Hurdles. Daughter of Nechole and Todd McSweeney, high school coaches are Adam Rio, Dan Simik, Melanie Rellstab, Jen Rio, plans to major in Biochemistry.
"Probably the most versatile athlete we have coming in," said Roberts. "She'll be looked upon immediately to score at the conference meet. "
"Brittani is a very outgoing and determined athlete who will be someone we look to rely upon to solidify our jumps and relay squads," said Wells.
Barbara Powers Bowling Green, OH, Bowling Green High School
Has run personal bests of 2:16 for 800m, 5:13 for 1600m, and 18:47 for 5000m. Finished 11th in the 2006 DI Ohio State Cross Country Meet where her team earned runner up honors. Was selected as one of the top senior cross country runners in Ohio and represented Team Ohio in the Mid East meet of Champions in Kettering, Ohio this past fall. Barbara was a key member of the Bowling Green High School Girls Cross Country Team that won the 2003, 2004, and 2005 Division I Ohio State Cross Country Team championships. Is a member of the academic honor roll and has earned All-Ohio honors as well as Academic All-Ohio honors. Daughter of Lindy and Buddy Powers, high school coach is Brian Tucker.
"Barbara is such a well rounded athlete and person," said Wells. "She possesses a special blend of speed and strength and just has an incredible work ethic. I am so excited to have a chance to work with Barbara and see her continue to develop as a runner. With the qualities she possesses she has a very bright future ahead of her."
Elizabeth Stone
Detroit, MI, Regina High School
School record holder in high jump with a personal best of 5'6" also earned All State honors as a member of the 4 x 100m and 4 x 200m relays. A captain of the Varsity Basketball Team and Track Team. In her 3 years on track she earned MVP twice, All Catholic, All Region, and Regional Champion Awards. All Academic Award for Varsity Basketball. Has earned a 4.0GPA through her Junior and Senior year. A member of the National Honor Roll and the National Society of High School Scholars.
Daughter of Davin Stone and Tara and Peter Andersen, high school coaches are Gregg Golden and Diane Laffey, plans to major in Chemistry.
"If there is one word to describe Lizz it is dedicated," said Roberts. "In the recruiting process you look for someone that wants to do everything right, that is Lizz Stone."
"I was impressed with Lizz from the first time I met her this fall and believe she possesses all the necessary components to be very successful here at BG," said Wells.
Courtney Krummert Milford, Ohio, Milford High School
Krummert, a native of Milford, Ohio, has been named GMC All-Academic for the past two seasons. She has broken three school records (800-meters, mile, 4x800-meter relay) and earned second team All-GMC during the 2006 cross country season. She qualified for the regional meet last track season. She currently attends Milford High School where she also plays volleyball and basketball. She is coached by Eric Kroell and holds personal bests of 2:18 for the 800-meters and 5:18 for the 1,600-meters. She is the daughter of William and Stephanie Krummert. She plans to major in nutrition sciences or pre-med.
"Courtney is an excellent student and very gifted athlete," said Wells. "Courtney has great potential in the middle distance area and will really solidify our middle distance squad. I was impressed with Courtney's athleticism and her warm personality."
Alexis Warren
Solon, Ohio, Solon High School
Warren a native of Solon, Ohio, will graduate from Solon High School this spring. She holds personal bests in the long jump of 16-02.50 and in the high jump of 5-04.00. In running events she has run 9.01 seconds in the 55-meter hurdles as well as a 14.60 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles, 12.7 seconds in the 100-meter dash, 26.2 seconds in the 200-meters, 58.0 seconds in the 400-meters and 2:45 in the 800-meters. She was the District champ in the 100-meter hurdles and placed second in 2005. She also finished fifth at the Regional in the 100-meter hurdles and sixth in 2005. She has earned many other athletic accomplishments.
"Alexis has all the necessary skills to be a very strong multi-event athlete," said Wells. "Alexis is dedicated and has clear goals for her future. Alexis is a very valuable addition to our track and field squad."
