BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Runs were a plenty at Warren E. Steller Field Tuesday afternoon as the Bowling Green State University baseball team took a 19-10 victory over the IPFW Mastodons. BGSU banged out 19 runs on 19 hits. In three games versus the `Dons this year, Bowling Green has outscored them 49-15.
Junior Andrew Foster went off for the baseball hat trick with three homeruns, one for every official at bat. The Bowling Green, Ohio native racked up five RBI and four runs scored while going 3-for-3 at the plate. As a team, the Falcons six total homeruns were one shy of the school record for most homeruns in one game. Sophomore Brian Hangbers stroked his team-leading fifth homerun while Senior Mike Barnard and Freshman Derek Spencer each poked their first dinger on the year.
Things started out slow for the Brown and Orange, trailing 3-1 after two and a half innings. The Falcon lineup awoke in the bottom of the third, however, putting a five-spot on the scoreboard. Sophomore Chris Gacom began the offensive outburst with a double into the right-center field gap. Hangbers then delivered a laser shot over the first basemen's head to score Gacom from second base. After a wild pitch allow Hangbers to move into scoring position, Senior Kurt Wells kept the output coming with a drive down the left-field line for an RBI-double. Spencer, who is batting .522 thus far in his collegiate career, connected on a two-run homer to cap off the third-inning scoring.
The offense kept rolling the following inning as BGSU posted another five runs. Gacom was the first batter once again, this time reaching first base via a walk. Hangbers took care of the rest with a bomb over the scoreboard in right-center field. Later in the inning, Freshman Dennis Vaughn recorded an RBI-single and Sophomore Travis Owens swatted a two-RBI double into the left-center field gap.
BGSU piled on five more runs in the seventh inning. Senior Josh Dietz recorded an RBI-single in addition to Foster's second homer of the season and Barnard's shot over the fence in left field.
IPFW began to mount a comeback with four runs in the eighth inning. Foster's third four-bagger, a two-run shot, in the home-half of the inning increased the Falcon lead back to 11 runs. The Mastodons pushed across a pair of runs in the top of the ninth before eventually falling, 19-10.
Game two of a five-game homestand for BGSU is scheduled for Wednesday, April 4th. The Xavier Musketeers will visit Steller Field for a 3 PM showdown.
