BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - In their final road trip of the season, the Falcon baseball team dominated a rain-shortened contest at Oakland. Freshman Derek Spencer's two homerun, four-RBI day led Bowling Green to a 15-3 victory before rain showers caused the game to be called after seven innings.
After a "1-2-3" inning for BGSU in the top of the first, the Golden Grizzlies notched the first run of the day in the home-half of the first. The lead would not last for long, however, as the Falcons put up a five-spot the next half inning.
Sophomore Brian Hangbers kicked things off with a single through the right side of the infield. Fellow Sophomore Brandon McFarland stroked an RBI-single two batters later to plate Hangbers. Spencer later stroked his first homer of the game, a two-run shot to deep center field. With two runners in scoring position, Freshman Mark Galvin completed the scoring with a two-out, base knock to center field for a pair of runs.
Oakland responded with another run in the bottom of the second, but it was all Falcons the next four innings. The Brown and Orange racked up ten more runs during that span. . Spencer led off the fourth frame with double down the left field line. Sophomores Travis Owens and Ryan Shay and Freshman Logan Meisler each recorded run-scoring hits in the five-run fourth. Hangbers then mimicked Spencer, blasting a two-run dinger over the center field wall.
Spencer was the first batter in the fifth inning as well. The Clay High School product hit another four-bagger to give the Falcons an 11-2 lead. BGSU marked up four more runs in the fifth and sixth innings, including an RBI-single by Freshman T.J. Blanton whom recorded three hits in as many at bats.
A rain delay, that lasted around hour, then halted play after five and half innings. Upon returning to the field for play, the two teams were able to get in another one and a half innings before a second coming of rain showers cancelled the game for good. Oakland managed to score another run after the delay to create the 15-3 final score.
Junior Nick Cantrell earned the win while Sophomore Marty Baird picked up the save after allowing just one run in four innings of relief.
BGSU caps off the 2007 season by hosting the Ohio Bobcats this Thursday-Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 3 PM on Thursday and Friday with a 1 PM start on Saturday. Saturday will also be Senior Day at Steller Field, honoring the hard work and dedication of this year's eight-member senior class.
