BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University baseball team notched their third consecutive "W" Friday afternoon, fighting back from a six-run deficit to earn a 8-6 victory over the Ohio Bobcats.
Sophomore Ryan Shay excelled both offensively and defensively in the contest. The Garden City, Michigan native piled up four hits while also flashing the leather on several spectacular defensive plays, including a bare-handed snag on a chopper down the third base line which he finished off by throwing across the diamond to get the runner out at first.
The Bobcats tagged Bowling Green's starter for six runs on just one-third of an inning pitched. OU would not score again, however, as Junior Nick Cantrell and Senior Adam Gumpf combined to work the mound for the next 8.2 innings without allowing a run. Cantrell earned the win by hurling five shutout innings and Gumpf went 3.2 innings without allowing a base runner, retiring all 11 batters faced.
BGSU wasted little time chipping away at the early hole they dug, posting two runs in the home-half of the first inning. Freshman Logan Meisler recorded a lead-off single to begin the frame. Freshman Mark Galvin followed with an RBI-triple that reached the wall in right center field. Sophomore Ryan Shay kept it coming with a double into left field, plating Galvin from third base.
The hits kept coming for the Falcons in the third inning as the Brown and Orange totaled five runs on five hits. Sophomore Brandon McFarland, Junior Andrew Foster and Freshman Derek Spencer each tallied run-scoring hits in the scoring outburst.
The tension level grew as both pitching staffs were flawless the next three innings of the one-run ball game. A pinch-hit single by Senior Josh Dietz pushed in another run for the Falcons in the seventh inning to give BGSU an 8-6 advantage.
Spencer took care of the ninth inning as all three Bobcat hitters grounded out to the Falcon shortstop who made the toss over to the first baseman for the "63" play in the scorebook.
Tomorrow's game three is Senior Day at Warren Steller Field as the eight-member senior class will be honored approximately 10-15 minutes before game time. First pitch is scheduled for 1 PM.
