BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University baseball team used some late inning heroics en route to a 2-1, extra inning victory at Cleveland State Wednesday evening. Junior Brett Browning worked the mound for seven innings, allowing just one run on two hits while striking out six Vikings. Freshman Phil Hettlinger finished off the two-hitter by tossing three relief innings of no-hit baseball.
Browning and Cleveland State's starting pitcher combined for an impressive pitchers' duel in the contest. As mentioned above, Browning allowed a lone run in seven innings while the Vikings' hurler allowed only one run in nine innings of work. Neither starter was the pitcher of record however as the game was stretched to 10 innings.
CSU drew first blood, pounding a pitch over the left field fence for a solo homerun and 1-0 lead in the seventh inning.
The Falcons couldn't muster the tying run through the first eight innings, but the Brown and Orange came through in the clutch.
Senior Josh Dietz reached on a single to begin the ninth inning rally. Dietz was replaced by Freshman David Borcherdt on the base paths as a pinch runner. A groundball advanced Borcherdt to second before an RBI-single by Freshman Derek Spencer evened the score at 1-1
Senior Mike Barnard kicked off the tenth inning with a single into right field. After Barnard was later thrown out at home, the Falcons did not crumble. Instead, Sophomore Marty Baird delivered an RBI-single to give the Falcons a 2-1 advantage. Hettlinger capped off the victory after retiring three straight batters after a walk in the bottom of the tenth.
Bowling Green returns home this weekend for a three-game weekend series against the Buffalo Bulls. First pitch is scheduled for Friday at 3 PM.
