BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Dear Falcon Soccer Alumni,
There will be no Alumni Golf Outing this year.
As a mandate from the Athletic Department, there will be no more individual program golf outings. Since receiving the memo a few weeks back, I've been in to talk to the powers that be. The decision was not made lightly and it is one they feel was made in the best interest of Falcon Athletics and each individual program. The philosophy for Bowling Green State University Athleticsis "Eighteen Sports, One Team." This is particularly a focus in the area of fundraising. The goal of the department is to raise the appropriate funds for individual programs while taking the coaches out of the role of fundraiser.
So as it relates to us, avenues have been set up for Men's Soccer to raise the same amount of money a golf outing would bring in without me and my new assistant, Ken White, having to invest an inordinate number of hours to get thejob done. That freed time will be used for continuing to improve the program: more time for recruiting, player development, planning, scouting, marketing Falcon soccer, making sure we continue to impress people academically. Not to mention that it alleviates the cost of putting on the outing, which should lead to more funds directly entering our budget. It's a positive move for our program.
There are two preferred methods for getting funds into our program. The first is the Falcon Bash, which was held June 2nd herein Bowling Green. This will be the one golf outing for the department and was held jointly at Forrest Creason and Stone Ridge Country Club. Hopefully you were able to get back to campus and join alumni of all sports in what was a fantastic weekend of events.
The second method for getting fundsinto our program is through the Falcon Club. I encourage all of you to join the Falcon club. There has been a fundamental change in the giving structure that I know you will appreciate. Now you can designate your gift to go directly to Men's Soccer. It's the perfect mix - Falcon Club expands its membership and you get to give directly to your program! One hundred percent (100%) of what you give will go to Men's Soccer. Also, if you have graduated since 2002, you could think about joining at the Young Alumni level and get all the introductory benefits at half the cost: again, a positive move!
Obviously, we want you to stay connected with the program you built. We need you! We still want to have an event in which you can all get together to reminisce, tell those stories that get better each year, talk about the future and meet the boys who now wear your jerseys. I'm open to ideas as to the best time that will allow the greatest number of you to get back to campus. We can still do an event August 25th since that date is already blocked off in your calendar. I know at a lot of schools they do their alumni event as a scheduled game in the Spring and couple that withan awards banquet. Like I said, I'm open to suggestions.
I do believe the direction the Athletic Department has chosen to go is positive for both Falcon Athletics and Men's Soccer as a program. Unfortunately we do not have the opportunity to make a gradual transition. However, you have always supported your program well and I know that you will continue to do so through the new avenues provided. We need you. We're counting on you and we will stay committed to keeping you connected to the program and each other.
Join the Falcon Club. Designate your gift to Men's Soccer. And send me your suggestions on what you would like to see as our alumni event. I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
