BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (BGSU Athletic Communications in conjunction with BGSUFalcons.com) - The Bowling Green State University softball team had one of the most successful seasons in school history in 2007, and that success is evident in the final NCAA Division I statistics of the year. The Falcons are listed numerous times in the individual and team categories in the last edition of national stats of the season.
On the individual list, Hayley Wiemer's name can be found no fewer than eight times. The super soph's strong second season brought smiles to the faces of the softball staff, Shannon Salsburg and Susan Sargent (alliteration provided at no extra charge to you, the reader).
Wiemer was ranked in both hitting and pitching categories. At the plate, she ranked 33rd in the nation in batting average, hitting .413 on the year. That figure ranked her sixth nationally among sophomores.
In the circle, Wiemer was 29th in the country in earned-run average, with an ERA of just 1.45. Junior Emily Gouge was also listed in that category, ranking 48th with an ERA of 1.59.
Some quick Saturday-evening research, compiled by one-half of the current BGSU athletic communications staff, revealed that the Falcons were one of just six schools to have two hurlers rank in the top-50 in ERA (DePaul, LSU, South Florida, Tennessee and Texas A&M).
At the plate, Wiemer ranked 26th in slugging percentage (.746), 43rd in walks per game (0.62), 58th in runs batted in per game (0.87), 62nd in home runs per game (0.24 -- a school-record 11 in 45 games). In the circle, she was 98th in the nation in victories (17) and tied for 82nd in saves (two). Gouge also had a pair of saves to match Wiemer in that category.
Senior Jeanine Baca capped her career with a solid season, and was ranked in several categories. The centerfielder was seventh in the country on the 'toughest to strike out' list, whiffing once per 29.4 at-bats. She fanned just five times in 147 AB on the season. Baca was also 30th in the nation in runs scored (0.96) and 69th in doubles per game (0.27).
Gouge ranked 61st nationally in strikeouts per seven innings, with 7.6.
As a team, the mighty Falcons were ranked among the top-50 teams in four categories and the top-100 in a total of seven. BGSU was 10th in the nation in ERA (1.54) and 17th in win-loss pct. (.733).
The Falcons were also 26th in the country in homers per game. BG obliterated the previous school record, hitting 47 round-trippers in 45 contests (1.04).
The BG batters ranked 47th in slugging percentage (.449), and the Falcons also were listed on the scoring (66th, 4.67 runs per game), fielding pct. (86th, .962) and doubles (98th, 1.18 per game) charts.
In Salsburg's first season as a head coach, the Falcons finished with a school-record winning percentage, going 33-12 on the year.
