BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - Bowling Green State University head tennis coach Penny Dean has announced her team's schedule for the 2007-08 season. The Falcons will participate in a pair of fall tournaments before the ITA regionals in November, then will dive back into the schedule in January of 2008.
The Falcons will host the BGSU Invitational on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 15-16, to open the season. Action is scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m. each day, and the event will mark the first competition at the new varsity tennis facility, located on Stadium Drive between Warren Steller Field and the BGSU Softball Field.
In addition to the host Falcons, other teams scheduled to compete in this historic event include Akron, Bradley, Cleveland State, Detroit, Toledo, Xavier and Youngstown State.
Following the BGSU Invitational, the Falcons will prepare for the Queen City Invitational in Cincinnati, Ohio, on Oct. 5-7. Members of the Brown and Orange will close the fall portion of the schedule with the Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich., several weeks later. The qualifying rounds of that tourney will be on Oct. 18-19, with the main draw running through Oct. 23.
BGSU returns to action in January, heading to Bloomington, Ind., for the Indiana Doubles Tournament on Jan. 12-13. A Jan. 19 match vs. Wright State kicks off the dual-match portion of BGSU's 2007-08 schedule. That match is scheduled to be held at Shadow Valley Tennis Club in Toledo.
After a trip to Butler (Jan. 20), the Brown and Orange will return to Shadow Valley for the next five matches, beginning with a Jan. 26 dual vs. Youngstown State. BGSU's non-conference slate also includes 'home' matches vs. UIC (Feb. 9), Indiana State (Feb. 10), Detroit (Feb. 15) and Duquesne (Feb. 16), followed by a weekend trip back to the Queen City to face Cincinnati (Feb. 23) and Xavier (Feb. 24).
Mid-American Conference play begins on March 21 for the Falcons, who will make a short trip north to face Toledo. After a match at Eastern Michigan the next day, the Falcons begin the home portion of the MAC slate by facing Northern Illinois on March 28.
After a weekend home set vs. Akron (April 4) and Buffalo (April 5), BG will travel to meet Ball State (April 11) and Miami (April 12) to close out the road portion of the regular-season schedule.
A home match vs. Western Michigan on April 19 is BGSU's final match before the MAC Championships. The league meet will be held in Buffalo, N.Y., from April 24-27.
Dean's eight-player roster is headed by seniors Jenna Nussbaum and Andrea Volle. The roster also consists of juniors Libby Harrison, Kelsey Jakupcin and Stefanie Menoff, sophomores Katia Babina and Samantha Kintzel and freshman Christine Chiricosta.
