Faced with torrential downpours and a field of NCAA Tournament contenders, the Bowling Green men's golf team battled their way to a tie for first in the Purdue Midwest Shootout on Saturday at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex in West Lafayette, Ind.
The Falcons battled the elements for 18 holes to score a 293 (+5) in their lone round of play Saturday. The finish would be good enough to knot Bowling Green and the University of Michigan at the top of the leader board.
When the dust settled, BGSU topped four teams that were in the NCAA Tournament last spring. The Falcons knocked off Purdue, Southern Methodist and Western Illinois, all three were participants in the NCAA Regionals last season. BGSU also defeated perennial powerhouse Arizona. Last season Arizona advanced to the NCAA Championships in Williamsburg, Virginia.
First place medals were shared by five golfers including two BGSU players, senior captain, Jace Walker and Andrew Ladwig. Both golfers finished with four birdies on their way to a 1-under finish.
On the front nine, Walker carded a 35 (+1) while Ladwig would finish the front with a 37 (+1). Both players pressed on at the turn, with Walker finishing even par on the back nine for an 18-hole total of 71. Ladwig would turn up the heat going 3-under on his last nine holes to tie a career-best 71.
Bowling Green native John Powers finished T-17th on the day. Powers finished the round with 12 pars, while shooting a 75 (37, 38).
Finishing a stroke behind Powers was sophomore Matt Schneider. He carded a 76 after shooting 38 on the front and back nine. Schneider also managed 12 pars in his round.
Senior Russell Goodwin rounded out the pack Saturday when he carded an 18-hole total of 81 (37, 44). Goodwin's score was good enough to finish T-69 at the Purdue Midwest Shootout.
After Saturday's tournament, the Falcons will face as a short reprieve as they host the John Piper Intercollegiate on Monday at Stone Ridge Golf Club in Bowling Green, Ohio.
