FAIRFAX, Va. - Freshman Matt Klancic scored the lone Falcons' goal as the Orange and Brown dropped their first match of the season at George Mason University on Friday afternoon. The Falcons now have a win, a loss and a tie (1-1-1) after three complete matches while the Patriots 3-1 win lifted Mason to 2-1-0 overall. The goal was the first in Klancic's young career as a Falcon.
Each of the Falcon's three goals this year has resulted as the first collegiate goal for the scorer.
George Mason jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and kept the Falcons scoreless through the end of the first half. The host then slipped another past junior goalkeeper Paul Shoemaker for their third and final score of the game after a little more than an hour of the match had expired (66:36).
Klancic put the Falcons on the scoreboard after receiving a serve from Hunter Van Houten toward the later portion of the second half at the 87:36 mark. The assist was Van Houten's first of the season.
"[Sean] Kelly [the Mason goalkeeper] is a very large, strong, athletic player and we needed just the right type of ball to even have a chance to maneuver past him," said head coach and George Mason Soccer Hall of Fame alum Fred Thompson. "Hunter gave the ball a nice shape and really set Matt up well to score."
Bowling Green will remain on the East Coast and will challenge American University in Washington, D.C on Sunday afternoon.
