BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - The Bowling Green State University tennis team dives back into the 2007-08 schedule this weekend, heading to Bloomington, Ind. The Falcons of head coach Penny Dean will begin the spring season with the Indiana Doubles Invitational on Saturday and Sunday (Jan. 12-13).
"We are looking forward to getting back into action and getting ready for dual-match play," said Dean. BGSU's last competition came the weekend of Oct. 19-21. "There are some very strong teams at this tournament, and it should be a good challenge for us."
Indiana University is hosting the tournament, which will consist of doubles matches on both days. Other teams scheduled to compete include Ball State, Indiana State and Louisville.
Official play is scheduled to begin Saturday morning at 11:30 a.m. EST and run until approximately 5:00 p.m. Sunday's action is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. Coaches will be able to mix their doubles teams after each round, if they so choose. Team scores will not be kept.
"This is a great opportunity for us to get in a lot of doubles play before the dual matches begin," said Dean. "It gives us a chance to try out some of our combinations in a non-scored setting. It's a nice idea.
"As I said, there are going to be some very strong teams there, so it will be a good way to get back into the groove before we begin the dual-match schedule."
Dean primarily stuck with the same doubles combinations during the fall season, using the following duos ...
* Katia Babina / Stefanie Menoff
* Christine Chiricosta / Samantha Kintzel
* Libby Harrison / Andrea Volle
* Kelsey Jakupcin / Jenna Nussbaum
Babina and Menoff won their flight at the season-opening BGSU Invitational on Sept. 16-17, and have a 5-2 record this season to date. Likewise, the Chiricosta/Kintzel tandem also won a flight title at BG's invite, and that team is 5-1 to date.
The Harrison/Volle team is 5-4 this year so far, while Jakupcin and Nussbaum combined to go 4-3, representing the Falcons in doubles play at the Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championship.
The Indiana Doubles Invitational will be BGSU's final action before dual-match play begins. The Falcons' first dual will be held on Saturday, Jan. 19, when BG takes on Wright State at Shadow Valley Tennis Club in the Toledo area.
