New Year's Resolution Worth Keeping - Win at Home
In his six-plus seasons with the Falcons, head coach Curt Miller's teams have won 31 of their 46 January league games ... in Anderson Arena alone they are 16-5 in January ... dating back to the current senior's freshman season, BG has lost just one MAC game at home in the opening month of the year ... that loss occurred on Jan. 12, 2005 when Eastern Michigan beat the Falcons by three points, 51-48 ... BGSU is 3-0 when facing Ohio in January.
Achter Named `Buzz Player' for the Nancy Lieberman Award
Senior Kate Achter has been added to the 'Buzz Player' list for the Nancy Lieberman Top Point Guard Award given annually by the Rotary Club of Detroit ... the award recognizes the nation's top collegiate point guard in women's Division I basketball ... the criteria for the award are the floor leadership, play-making and ball-handling skills that personified Hall of Famer Nancy Lieberman during her career ... the list of the top 10 point guards is determined by sportswriters from across the country by the end of January ... this list is then sent across the country to all sportswriters at which point they will have until mid-March to return their final ballot ... the winner will be announced in Detroit during the Final Four weekend ... currently Achter is one of 17 players on the list ... she is one of two MAC players to be mentioned - Western Michigan's Tiera DeLaHoussaye is the other ... past winners include UConn's Sue Bird (2000-02) and Diana Taurasi (2003-04), LSU's Temeka Johnson (2005), UNC's Ivory Latta (2006) and most recently Duke's Lindsey Harding ... for more information check www.pointguard.org ... in her three-plus seasons with the Falcons, Achter averages 28.7 minutes per games where she is good for an average of 11.7 points, 4.91 assists, 3.9 rebounds and 1.28 steals per game ... she is currently ranks 13th on the all-time scoring list and is the second best free throw shooter in Falcon history.
Nine is Just Fine!
In her nine starts, Tara Breske has averaged 11.8 ppg and 5.4 rpg ... her numbers are third and second highest on the team since the Dec. 5 Notre Dame game ... she is also tied for a team-high five blocks since entering the starting line-up ... she is shooting .500 or better from the floor (.549), three-point line (.571) and free throw line (.727) while averaging 25.9 minutes per game ... six of those nine starts have led to double-digit point nights with two in the 20-plus range ... her more than 106 points in the past nine games triples her output from all of last season (33 points; 23 games) ... in the last three games she has had just two turnovers and has had three games without a turnover ... in home starts she averages 14 points and 6.3 rebounds.
Fabulous Freshmen
With her 18 points in the Mid-American Conference opener vs. Akron, freshman Lauren Prochaska has sketched her name into the Falcon freshman record books with her 226 points this season ... the Plain City, Ohio native surpassed former Falcons Carin Horne (220) and Megan Thorburn (212) and is 16 points out of the top ten on the all-time rookie scoring list ... Prochaska is the leading scorer for the Falcons this season averaging 15.1 points per game, also good enough for the second best rookie effort ... she needs one steal to break into the top 12 of the all-time frosh category ... she has snatched a team high 29 thus far ... also, with her eight blocks this season, Crystal Murdaugh has tied herself with three former Falcons on the rookie blocked shot short list ... with the addition of Prochaska and Murdaugh to the lists, eight of Miller's freshman have made their way to at least one of the all-time rookie lists.
Spreading the Wealth
In the past four wins, BGSU has seen three or more players in double-digit figures ... in fact, three or more Falcons have sunk 10-plus points 10 times this season ... they are 8-2 when accomplishing the feat ... Lauren Prochaska has posted double-digits in a team-high 14 games this season and the Falcons are 11-3 when she does so ... BG is 6-3 when she scores 15 or more ... Kate Achter has appeared on the boxscore with 10 or more 10 times while Lindsey Goldsberry and Tara Breske have done it four and seven times, respectively ... against Hampton each of the four scored between 13-17 points ... each was perfect from the foul line that night account for 17 of the Falcons 21 FT ... Breske, Achter and Prochaska have posted simultaneous 10-plus scoring nights on three occasions ... BGSU is 2-1 in those three games ... two of which, Notre Dame and Akron, took place in Anderson Arena ... the St. Bonaventure win is the only time in which only one Falcon was in the DD figures (Kate Achter, 32).
MAC - Miller's Accomplished Conference
Since becoming a head coach in the Mid-American Conference, Curt Miller has won three regular season titles, three tournament titles and another three C-O-Y awards ... he is 67-30 all-time and has lost just four league games in the past three years ... through those three seasons, beginning with the current seniors' rookie season, he and the Falcons are 54-4 ... in the past 34 regular season MAC contests, the Falcons are 34-33 dating back to a win over then MAC contender, Marshall on Feb. 23, 2005 ... Miller's biggest turn around came in 2003-04 when he took a 5-11 record from the previous season (2002-03) and rearranged it into an 11-5 MAC record ... in the past four seasons he has won 11 or more MAC games ... entering the 2007-08 season, Kent State's Bob Lindsay is the only current league coach to boast a better win percentage (1990-pres.; 219-81) ... Ball State's Tracey Roller, who began her time at BSU in 2001 trailed Miller by a win and a loss (65-31; .677) at the conclusion of the 2006-07 season ... both Lindsay and Roller's teams won their first league game on Wednesday night with Kent's ending in a dramatic OT win in Athens at Ohio University.
History in the Making
With Wednesday's (Jan. 9) win over the University of Akron, head coach Curt Miller (2001-pres; 136-63) beat Jaci Clark's (1991-98; 135-65) record of 135 wins in seven years with the Falcons ... with the record secured, he will now have 15 remaining games on the regular season schedule to earn the eight needed wins to surpass Fran Voll (1984-91; 144-60) as the winningest coach in BGSU wbb history ... to say he is in good company is an understatement ... as head coach Voll posted four 20+ win seasons, four MAC Tournament titles and three regular-season league championships ... in 1989 Voll's Falcons won BGSU's first ever NCAA Tournament game, a 69-59 decision over the Cincinnati Bearcats in Anderson Arena ... Clark, the top assistant under Voll, also boasts four 20+ win seasons on her seven-year resume with her alma mater ... in consecutive seasons her squads won both the MAC regular-season and tournament championships while making appearances in the NCAA tournament ... she also led one team to the WNIT in her final season with the Orange and Brown ... currently, Miller's .684 win percentage is the second best in BGSU basketball history when comparing both the men's and women's programs ... Voll (wbb, .706) is the leader followed by Miller (wbb; .681), Clark (wbb; .675), Harold Anderson (mbb, 1942-63, .655, 367-193) and Jim Larranaga (mbb, 1986-1997, .541, 170-144) ... most will remember Larranaga's recent success with the George Mason Patriot's as they advanced to the 2006 men's Final Four ... he is the only coach on the aforementioned roster to advance further in the NCAA tournament than Miller, but obviously did not do it with a BGSU squad ... when comparing Miller with his MAC peers, the HC's 135 wins rank in the top ten in the league's history ... he is one of five active head coaches on the top ten list and has been in leadership his position for the shortest period of time by a minimum of two seasons ... Miami's Maria Fantananrosa, the next closest coach to compare to Miller's experience, has two-seasons of seniority over Miller in the league ... she also has ten wins on Miller (146).
BGSU vs. Ohio Quick Facts
Ohio University, under the direction of second year head coach Sylvia Crawley, is the only league squad to hold on to a current win streak over head coach Curt Miller and his Falcons ... that one loss occurred last season (Feb.24, 2007) and not only gave BG it's first MAC loss since Feb. 19, 2005 (at EMU), but it also ended a 39 game home win streak in Anderson Arena ... Ohio is one of five programs to have lost to Miller on seven occasions over the past six seasons ... two have suffered six losses with another pair being defeated eight times ... Akron and Toledo have been handed defeats on nine and ten respective dates ... against Ohio, senior Kate Achter averages 11.8 points and 4.4 assists ... as a sophomore she nearly double-doubled with her nine assists and 14 points ... Lindsey Goldsberry has averaged one steal per contest versus Ohio ... in their first meeting last season, she tied her then-career-high of four helpers against the Bobcats in Athens ... Whitney Taylor, Tara Breske, Laura Bugher and Sarah Clapper will be relative enigmas to the Ohio staff and bench as the four have played in just two combined games against the Green and White ... after posting a 1-2 record versus the Bobcats in his first season (01-02), including a first round tournament loss, Miller and his Falcons went on a six game win steak over Ohio spanning five seasons ... in his three losses to the program, Miller's squads have never lost by more than nine points ... assistant coach Kevin Eckert is a two-time alumni of Ohio University earning both his undergraduate and graduate.
