AKRON, Ohio - The host University of Akron scored 18 of the game's first 20 points en route to an 80-44 win over the Bowling Green State University men's basketball team Sunday night (Jan. 20). The Mid-American Conference game was held at UA's Rhodes Arena.
With the win, the Zips improve to 14-3 on the season, and assume sole possession of first place in the MAC's East Division with a 4-0 league record. The Falcons drop to 7-9 and 2-2, respectively.
Akron's Quade Milum led all scorers with 22 points, making 10 of his 11 shots from the field. Jeremiah Wood joined him in double digits, with 12 points on the night.
For the Falcons, junior Brian Moten was the lone player in double figures, with 13 points off the bench.
UA has now won 20 consecutive games at Rhodes Arena, and the Zips have won 23-straight MAC games at home.
The Zips opened up an 18-2 lead after back-to-back three-pointers by Quade Milum and Steve McNees, with the latter coming at the 13:37 mark. With the score 21-4, the Falcons scored five-straight points, as junior Darryl Clements found sophomore Otis Polk for a short jumper at the 11:18 mark, and junior Nate Miller stole the ball and hit Moten for a three-pointer at 10:52.
The hosts, however, scored the next five points as part of a 10-2 run that gave UA a 20-point lead at 31-11.
The Falcons looked to get back into the game by getting to the foul line, making five free throws in the last 2:43 of the half. But, Milum had a pair of dunks for the Zips in the final minute, the last coming on an alley-oop pass from McNees with just two seconds left before the intermission. The Zips took a 45-19 lead into the break.
Milum led the Zips with 12 points in that opening half, going 5-for-6 from the field.
UA kept increasing the lead, moving ahead by a 56-24 count with four minutes elapsed in the second half.
The Falcons got a short jumper from Clements midway through the half, followed by Miller's steal and long outlet pass to Moten for a layup. A moment later, Moten fed Larson down low for a layup and a 6-2 BGSU run. But, Chris McKnight answered with a short jumper, and a Nick Dials three-pointer gave the Zips a 67-33 lead at the eight-minute media timeout.
Akron's lead grew as wide as 39 points, on Nick Goddard's triple with 4:15 left. The Zips made eight three-pointers on the night.
A bright spot for the Falcons was the play of freshman Cameron Madlock. Madlock, credited with just four minutes of playing time, had six points and seven rebounds, along with an assist and a blocked shot.
Miller and redshirt freshman Chris Knight had seven points apiece. Miller led the Falcons with four assists and three steals, while Knight pulled down a game-high nine rebounds. The Falcons held a 37-34 margin on the boards.
Akron shot 51.4 percent from the field in the first half en route to a 48.5% rate for the game. BGSU was held to a 16-for-48 night (33.3%) from the floor.
The Falcons turned the ball over 21 times, to just seven for the home team.
BGSU will return home for the next two games, beginning Wednesday (Jan. 23). The Falcons will close the first round of intra-divisional play by hosting Miami University in a 7:00 p.m. tip at venerable Anderson Arena.
NOTES
* Freshman Cameron Madlock, as mentioned, saw the most extensive playing time of his career and made the most of it ... prior to Sunday, Madlock had played one minute in each of four games ... he came into the Akron game without any other stats, but went 3-for-4 from the field en route to the six-point night vs. the Zips, and was the Falcons' second-leading rebounder, with seven.
* Another first-year Falcon, sophomore walk-on Matt Karaffa, played the final 2:11 of the game ... prior to Sunday, Karaffa had played just one second all season, in the Indiana State game.
