BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Miami University guard Amanda Jackson had a game-high 27 points to lead the RedHawks to a 63-60 win over the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team on Tuesday (Jan. 22) night. The Mid-American Conference tilt was held at the venerable Anderson Arena.
With the win, the RedHawks improved to 11-8 overall and 3-2 in the MAC, dropping the Falcons to a respectable 15-4 overall record. The loss was the first in the Eastern swing of the MAC and gives BGSU a 4-1 record to carry into the Western division's territory.
BG was led by 20 points from freshman guard Lauren Prochaska, while Lindsey Goldsberry added 15. Freshman Crystal Murdaugh then tallied a team-high nine rebounds and nearly found the 10 point region with her nine matching points.
Prochaska opened the game with a made three-pointer (19:15), her first of four on the evening, but the short lived lead, 3-0, would be the last for BG as MU's Laura Markwood mirrored Prochaska's efforts to tie the match (17:59) and was later followed by a Jackson trey that would permanently give the visitor's the lead, 6-3. Markwood and Jackson were responsible for the first 11 RedHawk points.
As both programs struggled to find their touch, the Falcons were held below 10 total points for 10:39 of the first half. They were finally pushed over the hump on a pair of made free throws by reserve point guard Tracy Pontius, 11-22. That duo of points would be the first and last from the BGSU bench.
In cutting the once 13 point lead to 11 on Pontius' FT's, the Falcons strung together a run at Miami out scoring the RedHawks 9-2 over the next 2:55 until BG was within four points at 7:26 as a result of another pair of FT's; only this time Goldsberry was given credit for the makes, 24-20.
Miami, also off to a slow start, took time between their next baskets, but by 2:41 their lead had jumped back to seven, 27-20, while the Falcons' points remained stagnate on the scoreboard. In fact, before Murdaugh hit her jumper with 1:20 left in the first half, BG had not scored from the floor since Tara Breske had laid in a pair of points in the paint at the 9:44 mark and Prochaska tagged a three-ball of her own a minute (8:32) later.
Jackson added insult to injury with back-to-back field goals first at the 1:00 mark and next at 00:16 just prior to leaving the floor for the intermission.
At the half, Bowling Green found themselves down nine points, 33-24. At the time, Jackson had accounted for 17 of Miami's points and was the only player, on either bench, to reach double-digits.
Relentlessly, Bowling Green fought back to find their successful shooting touch in the second half, and by 16:04 they cut a once 11 point deficit to twin field goals, 40-36, on another Goldsberry three-point special. Breske followed with a momentum shot cutting the lead to two points at 15:21 resulting from a missed Jackson three pointer, but as quickly as they cut the MU lead, the visitor's in red regained it and by 12:14 BG found themselves nine points short once again, 47-38.
By 9:22, MU took advantage of the Falcons' struggling shooting night and went ahead to stay in the plus-11-to-15 point range through the final minutes of the match.
In the last 1:35 of the contest, 12 points back, Bowling Green went on to out score Miami 11-2 with five of Goldsberry's points being registered with under 30-seconds to play.
Goldsberry first sank her third three of the night with 00:29 remaining to cut the MU lead to 61-56 by way of a Prochaska assist causing a RedHawk timeout. An offensive foul by Achter near mid-court put the ball back in the hands of Miami as Stephanie Ford hit both ends of her FT chance to extend the late advantage back to seven, 56-63.
Murdaugh followed with a jumper in the paint with 00:11 reading on the clock and was fouled in the process. Despite missing the FT, Goldsberry, the bottom player in the midst of a scrum, came up with the rebound and a pass to Breske under the basket. Though the sophomore got off the lay-up, the traffic around her and her unbalanced stroke prevented the try from falling in the Falcons' favor.
With 0.3 left on the clock, Ford was called for a foul and sent Goldsberry to the line. The junior converted both FT's as the Falcons finished three points under Miami in the 63-60 loss.
Up next for the Falcons: Bowling Green will travel to Muncie, Ind. to take on the Cardinals of Ball State University. The Saturday (Jan. 26) afternoon game will begin at 3:00 p.m. Dependant on tomorrow's MAC West outcomes, the match could see a pair of one-loss programs square-off in the first MAC crossover session.
Falcon Notes
*BGSU's current seven game win streak against Miami was snapped with tonight's loss. It marked the first time a player on the current Miami roster has beat Bowling Green throughout their collegiate careers. The last time BGSU lost to Miami was February 15, 2003.
*The Falcons were 7-24 (29.2%) from the floor in the first 20:00 of play. Their 29.2 percent was the lowest FG% they have recorded in the first half this season. The Falcons went on to finish at 35.0% (21-60) on the night. In its only other occurrence of shooting at 35% or less, BGSU was 19-61 (31.1%) by game's end at Lipscomb in early November - the Falcons went on to win that game 54-42.
*Early in the second half, (16:56) Kate Achter connected on a long range jumper to surpass her former teammate, Carin Horne (1,341 pts.), to rise to 12th on the BGSU all-time scoring list. At game's end, Achter had six points and has accumulated 1,344 in her career with the Orange and Brown. She sits 19 points out of 11th place (1,363 pts; Stephanie Coe) and 68 out of the top ten (1,412 pts; Angie Bonner).
*Lindsey Goldsberry's 15 points marked the first time in her three-year career at Bowling Green that she scored double-digits against Miami. She also had six assists, six rebounds and three steals in 38 minutes.
