BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team scored the first 15 points of the game en route to an 80-50 victory over visiting Chicago State University. The non-conference game was held at venerable Anderson Arena.
With the win, the Falcons close the non-league portion of the schedule with a record of 11-3. The visiting Cougars drop to 7-8 on the year.
The win also signified another milestone for head coach Curt Miller. In his seventh season, he has met former women's basketball head coach Jaci Clark's 135 wins and is tied as the second winningest coach in BGSU Falcon history. He sits nine wins off the leader, Fran Voll, who accumulated 144 wins at the helm of Falcon women's basketball.
Sophomore Tara Breske scored the first seven points of the game, with all three baskets coming on assists by senior Kate Achter, as the Falcons built that 15-0 lead. Breske wound up with 20 points in just 21 minutes on the afternoon.
Two freshmen, Jen Uhl and Lauren Prochaska, joined Breske in double-digits on the day. Uhl scored 13 points, while Prochaska had 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds. It was Uhl'ds third double-digit night as a Falcon and first at home; Prochaska has seen ten-or-more points in every game but one.
Achter just missed a double-double, scoring nine points and dishing out 10 assists on the day.
Jasmin Dixon led the Cougars with a game-high 22 points (10-20); no other player scored more than twice from the floor. Courtney Waldon and Brittany Nair paced the remainder of the roster with six points apiece.
For the second time in as many games, the Falcons turned a lengthy scoring drought by their opponent (12:13 first-half) into a large and maintainable lead enabling every member of the active roster to see live game action. Twelve of the thirteen Falcons who saw the floor scored in the victory. With ten-minutes off the first half game clock, BGSU had already built a 17-4 lead and would go on to stay ahead 13-plus points for the remainder of the contest.
Although BG held a 34-9 lead over CSU with just over 3:30 lingering in the half, the visiting program from Chicago put together a 13-5 run hitting a perfect 4-0 from the field and sinking two free throws to cut the once 25 point lead to 17 just before the first intermission.
Prior to that run, the Cougars had suffered from a 5-20 for the previous 17-minutes of play. The Falcons on the other hand, were cold for the final 1:33 of the half missing their final five shots.
Five separate players contributed to the run; Dixon was responsible for the final four points of the half, including a buzzer beating jumper that was recorded at the two-second mark.
The Cougars continued to cut the BG advantage, which included a 39-22 half-time lead, scoring the first points out of the intermission on a Courtney Waldon three-pointer at 19:36 via the pass from her sister and teammate Alyssa Waldon.
CSU, who would finish the half going 11-30, hit four of their first six shots to keep the BG lead in the high teens through the 12-minute mark, but the Falcons finally crossed the 20-plus point hump as Prochaska hit one of her twin three-pointers at 10:40. Both she and Breske finished the night going 2-3 from behind the semicircle while Achter knocked down one. The former driving-threat has hit seven-of-twenty three's this season totaling more makes and attempts than her previous three seasons.
The Falcons will open Mid-American Conference play on Wednesday (Jan. 9) evening as the Akron Zips are scheduled to pay a visit to the Double-A. The first game of the conference season will commence at 7:00 p.m.
Falcon Notables
*Tara Breske scored a team high 20-points despite playing just 21-minutes ... 20-points are second best personal outing this season (21-points personal best) and the 4th best by any BGSU player in 2007-08 ... seven rebounds marks her second best outing this season on the boards ... her two three pointers were a season high (2-3) ... eight made field-goals is second best outing for a BGSU player this season ... also picked-
up two assists and a two steals in the win.
*BGSU has outscored their opponents 158-86 in their two most recent outings.
*Against Chicago State, BG's post players were responsible for 50 of the Falcons 80 points. Meaning, had the BGSU guards not scored, the BGSU posts would have tied the entire CSU team, 50-50. It was the best outing of the season for the forwards; previously they had scored a combined 42 points versus Florida Gulf Coast University.
*The women's basketball Falcons are 6-1 when playing prior to, or on the day of a Falcon football bowl game. Tomorrow the football Falcons will take on the Tulsa Golden Hurricane in the GMAC Bowl.
