BOWLING GREEN, OHIO - The Notre Dame hockey team scored eight unanswered goals after Bowling Green had tied the scored at 1-all midway through the first period and on their way to a 9-1 triumph at the BGSU Ice Arena Saturday night.
With the win, which extended their unbeaten streak to eight games, the Fighting Irish improved to 9-3-1 overall and 5-2-1-1 in Central Collegiate Hockey Association play while the Falcons are now 5-7-2 overall and 4-5-1-0 in league action.
Notre Dame opened the scoring at the 9:01 mark of the first period as freshman Billy Maday scored on the power play. But, the Falcons bounced right back, just 2:50 later, with their own man-advantage marker, the first collegiate goal for freshman defenseman Nick Bailen. Sophomore Jacob Cepis and senior Kevin Schmidt earned the assists on Bailen's goal.
The Falcons were still in the game after two periods as Notre Dame added two tallies in the second stanza to take a 3-1 lead to the locker room at the second intermission.
But, the flood gates opened in the final period as the Fighting Irish scored six times, including three times on the power-play and once short-handed, to complete the weekend sweep of Bowling Green.
Seven different players scored for Notre Dame, who came into the weekend series ranked fifth or sixth in the nation depending on the poll, and 14 different players chipped in with at least one point. Senior goaltender Jordan Pearce made 22 saves to pick up the win for Notre Dame while senior netminder Jimmy Spratt had 23 saves for the Falcons.
Notre Dame was six-of-12 on the power play while the Falcons converted once in seven tries. The Fighting Irish scored eight power play goals in the weekend series and outscored the Falcons, 14-2.
Bowling Green will now get ready for another nationally-ranked foe as Minnesota State comes to the BGSU Ice Arena for a weekend series on Nov. 28-29. It will be the first meeting between the two programs.
"This was a 3-1 game that just totally got away from us on the penalty kill," head coach Scott Paluch said. "I liked the energy our team had to start the game. I liked our five-on-five play, but there was just way too many penalties to have success in that game. It got away from us."
