The Bowling Green State University football team had a busy day with the media this afternoon (Nov. 3) following the 45-30 win over Kent State. Here are some of their thoughts.
Head Coach Gregg Brandon
On Amstutz stepping down as Toledo football coach
"He's a great coach, a great guy, and not only for Toledo, I think the MAC will miss Coach Amstutz. He's been a guy in this league for a long time and has been a great advocate of the conference."
On whether or not win over Kent State gives team momentum
"I hope so. We're still playing for a lot. We told the kids before that it's a four game playoff and single elimination. If you lose, you go home. That's the way it is right now, and that's the way it is for everybody that's playing for something right now. Even the big boys playing for the national championship. If you lose, you go home. That's November in college football, and it's great to be able to sit in front of your team and say, `We're playing for a chance to get to the championship.'"
On Chris Wright
"Chris is kind of like the whole team. He's been inconsistent, up and down. For him to show up Saturday like he did, when we needed him. He made some big plays in the game. I think that's huge, and we've been challenging not only Chris but all of our guys that we need to become consistent so that we can win consistently and this is just another example of that."
On being able to talk about a win
"It's great. It was a great feeling. It felt like a big weight was lifted off our shoulders, getting a win at home, finally taking care of business. We talked about it all week, wanting to get it done here. We've had great fan turnouts, and we've let them down a couple of times. But it was fantastic, that feeling coming out in the first half, just how locked in and passionate we were with the game plan we had. It just felt awesome."
On what's at stake in the next game, at Ohio
"Everything's at stake for us. The way we're looking at it now is a one game season. We got in the locker room up 28-0 this last week and it was a one half season for us. That's what we said in the locker room, we've got to come out and all that mattered was the next half. This week is all that matters again. If we want to contend for a position at the end, we have to treat it like it's the postseason in the NFL where you've got one game and you're out if you lose. That's how we're looking at it, take Ohio and get in the film room, get ready for them, and be ready to go.
Jason Rice
On his feelings about the game on Saturday
"I thought I'd be nervous as heck, but when Coach Hunter said, `Rice, you're in,' I was excited. I was ready to do my job, whether it was to get the ball or make the block."
On his feelings about more playing time in future
"I hope so. I'd love to play more, but Chris Bullock is a great back and Anthony Turner is awesome. Everybody wants to play, but you've got to know your role and I know mine."
On how he might impact others on the team
"When you see someone working harder, making a play, it makes everybody else get going, a little momentum. Hopefully I got the guys going a little bit."
