SAULT STE. MARIE, MICH. - The Bowling Green State University hockey team came back from an early three-goal deficit to earn a tie in its Central Collegiate Hockey Association game against Lake Superior Saturday night.
The Falcons and Lakers skated to a 4-4 overtime tie sending the two teams to a shootout under the new league rules this season. LSSU won the shootout, 2-1, to earn the extra point.
The Lakers, who were 2-0 winners in the series opener Friday night, scored three times in the first period and looked on their way to taking both games of the series. But, the Falcons found their offense in the second period scoring four times to, not only get back in the game, but take the lead going into the final period.
The Falcons started their comeback about midway through the middle stanza when sophomore Dan Sexton skated to between the circles and beat Laker goalie Brian Mahoney-Wilson with a low shot at the 9:40 mark. It was the first goal Mahoney-Wilson had allowed in the series in almost five periods. The goal was the fourth of the season for Sexton.
The Falcons made sure the momentum would stay on their side when sophomore David Solway gathered the rebound of a Russ Sinkwich shot from the right point and showed great patience before backhanding the puck by Mahoney-Wilson to cut the Laker lead to one. Solway's fifth goal of the season came at the 11:06 mark.
The Falcons then tied the game and took the lead later in the period on another pair of goals less than two minutes apart.
Sophomore Jacob Cepis notched his first marker of the season at the 16:56 mark banging home the puck in a scramble in front of the net and senior Brandon Svendsen gave the Falcons the lead with an unassisted shorthanded goal at the 18:49 mark. Svendsen skated up the right boards and fired the puck beating Mahoney-Wilson high to the short side for his fifth goal of the season.
LSSU scored the only goal of the third period, the second of the game by Troy Schwab, at the 3:30 mark to force the overtime period in which the Falcons had a 3-1 edge in shots, but neither team could end the game.
In the shootout, BG junior James Perkin led off by scoring on his attempt, but Laker Steven Kaunisto matched him. Sexton was turned away on his attempt while LSSU center Rick Schofield converted and when Cepis could not beat Mahoney-Wilson, the Lakers earned a fourth point for the weekend.
BG senior goalie Jimmy Spratt, who made a point blank save with 40.5 seconds left in regulation to force the extra period, was credited with 32 saves while Mahoney-Wilson had 33 stops. The Falcons had a 37-36 edge in shots and were one-of-four on the power-play. LSSU converted one-of-six man-advantage situations.
The Falcons, now 3-5-2 overall and 2-3-1-0 in the CCHA, will return home to host Northern Michigan next weekend. Lake Superior is now 3-3-2 overall and 3-2-1-1 in conference play.
