BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University track and field team was split in half on Friday Dec. 12, in their annual Orange and Brown competition. The Brown team, led by junior Shantell Lewis and freshman Saisha Gaillard, took home the win outscoring the Orange 168-156.
"The team did a nice job of getting out and competing hard." said head coach Cami Wells, "We had some good solid performances in all areas."
Lewis and Gailliard were some of the outstanding athletes at the meet. Lewis won the 150 meter sprint with a time of 18.2 seconds and was the anchor runner on the winning team in the 4 x 200 meter relay. Gailliard placed second in the 600 meter with a time of 1:39 and ran a leg on the Brown team's 4 x 200 meter relay. The Brown team would elect Lewis for the Falcon of the Meet award and Gailliard was a close runner up.
Although Lewis won the Falcon of the Meet for the Brown team, senior Kara Butler won the award for the Orange team. Butler was the winner of the 2000 meter race with a time of 6:41 and also was the lead runner for the Orange in the 4 x 200 meter relay.
Many other upperclassmen also looked impressive throughout the meet. Seniors Whitney Hartman and TaKarra Dunning dueled for the number one spot in the weight throw and shot put. Hartman would end up winning the weight throw, 58'1", and Dunning won the shot, 48'3.5". Junior Carly Wells also showed her talent winning the 1000 meter race with a time of 3:01.
"Our upperclassmen performed well and we also had a strong showing out of the freshman and sophomores," said Wells.
Sophomore Heather Conger and freshman Jackie NeCamp would both record victories in their events. Conger ran a winning time of 1:38 in the 600 meter sprint and NeCamp would win the 300 meter sprint with a time of 43.91. Sophomore Brittani McNeal also looked strong finishing .3 seconds behind Lewis in the 150 meter sprint.
"I am pleased with the meet outcome." said Wells, "We are focused on having a strong finish to the semester in the classroom and coming back ready to compete in January."
The Falcons will be back in competition hosting the BGSU Challenge on Jan. 17.
