BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green men's basketball team held Detroit scoreless for almost 10 minutes in the first half and beat the Titans 58-38 Sunday night at Anderson Arena. It was the first time a BGSU team had held an opponent to less than 40 points since defeating Western Ontario 87-37 on Feb. 1, 1964. The Falcons had been on the road for almost a month prior to holding Detroit to just 23 percent shooting on the night.
Four players scored in double figures for BGSU and the Falcons outrebounded Detroit 49-28, a stat made more impressive by the fact that the Titans had won the rebounding battle in each of its first seven contests.
Although Bowling Green shot just 39 percent in the first 20 minutes, the Falcons built a 28-13 halftime lead by defending with tenacity. Detroit's Chris Hayes scored on a lay-up with 15:33 to play in the first half, but the Titans were unable to dent the scoreboard again until Donavan Foster had a lay-up with 5:46 to play. During that stretch, BGSU extended its lead from three points to 17 and never looked back.
Detroit, in fact, made just four baskets in the first half and did not have an assist until midway through the second. The Titans ended with just two assists on the night and made just 10 field goals.
BGSU quickly built its biggest lead of the game with a 12-2 run to start the second half, capped by a Joe Jakubowski three-pointer to make it 40-15. Detroit did get back to within 10 with 4:04 to play, but the Falcons ended the game on a 10-0 run for the 20 point victory.
Jakubowski ended the contest with 13 points, nine rebounds and seven assists, while Brian Moten bounced back from a 1-for-11 performance in the team's last game to lead the Falcons with 15. Darryl Clements added 13 points and Nate Miller had 10 points and seven rebounds. Five different Falcons had at least five rebounds.
Detroit falls to 2-6 with the loss and Bowling Green improves to 4-4 with the victory. The Falcons will head back on the road to play at Central Arkansas Saturday at 6 p.m. CT.
