Falcons Jump On Top Of Eastern Illinois Early And Cruise To 78-60 Win

Bowling Green, Ohio - Chris Knight came off the bench to record his first double-double of the season and the Bowling Green State University men's basketball team built an 18-point halftime lead before cruising to a 78-60 win over Eastern Illinois Sunday at Anderson Arena. The Falcons improved to 4-0 at home with the victory, scoring a season-high 42 points in the first half.
Bowling Green never trailed in the contest, scoring the first five points of the game on a Marc Larson lay-up and a Brian Moten three-point play. BG used an Erik Marschall lay-up to gain its first double-digit lead of the contest at 21-9 and the Falcons methodically extended its lead throughout the half, taking a 42-24 lead into the locker room. Bowling Green led by as many as 25 in the second half and was never threatened.
The Falcons shut down Eastern Illinois' leading scorer, Romain Martin, who entered the contest averaging over 17 points per contest. Moten and Darryl Clements shut him down, holding him to five points on 2-of-12 shooting. As a team, the Panthers were just 36 percent from the field and were outrebounded 45-32 as Bowling Green collected 19 offensive boards. Those caroms resulted in a 21-4 advantage in second chance points.
Knight finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds, making 8-of-9 free-throws. He was one of three Falcons to finish in double figures in scoring as Joe Jakubowski had 13, to go with five assists, and Moten had 12. Nate Miller added nine points, six rebounds, four assists, two blocks and two steals, while Erik Marschall had nine points and seven rebounds.
Bowling Green made 22-of-26 free-throws on the afternoon despite shooting only 39 percent from the floor. The Falcons made just 3-of-14 three-pointers in the second half.
With the loss, Eastern Illinois falls to 3-8, while Bowling Green improves to 6-5. The Falcons will head on the road to face Duquesne Wednesday at 4 p.m.
