"We are looking forward to this weekend's matches," said Dean. "We face two good opponents this weekend, and we know we have our work cut out for us.
"Detroit has had some close matches with several Mid-American Conference opponents this year And, I remember being very nervous during last year's match vs. Duquesne."
The Falcons enter the weekend with a perfect 5-0 record in dual-match play, the best start to a season in a quarter century for the Brown and Orange. Four of those five wins have come at Shadow Valley, including victories over UIC (6-1; Feb. 9) and Indiana State (4-3; Feb. 10) last weekend.
Junior Kelsey Jakupcin helped the Falcons to the ISU win with a victory over nationally-ranked Jennifer Migan at the top singles flight. Jakupcin has a 5-0 dual-match record at the #1 flight, and was named the Mid-American Conference Player of the Week for the second time this season.
BGSU will be looking to extend several impressive streaks. The Falcons have won 12 consecutive dual matches at Shadow Valley, and the team is 26-1 at the facility over the last three-plus years. BGSU went 6-0 at Shadow Valley in the 2004-05 season, 8-1 in '05-06 and a perfect 8-0 last year before beginning this season with a 4-0 mark at the venue.
BGSU has won 23-straight non-conference dual matches at Shadow Valley. The Falcons' last loss to a non-MAC foe came over four years ago, vs. DePaul on Feb. 6, 2004.
Detroit enters the BGSU match with a 2-3 dual-match record this season to date. The Titans have faced three MAC squads among the five duals, with a 4-3 win over Akron. UDM is riding a two-match winning streak, having downed UA and Oakland on the same day. Detroit has also faced Michigan State (L 7-0), Eastern Michigan (L 4-3) and Toledo (L 5-2) this year to date.
Duquesne takes a 3-1 overall record into the weekend. The Dukes began the dual-match schedule with wins over Mercyhurst, Bloomsburg and Bucknell, before losing to Georgetown, 6-1, last weekend. DU will take on Toledo Friday evening before meeting the Falcons the following day.
BGSU leads Detroit, 4-0, in the all-time series between the teams. The Falcons posted a 7-0 win over the Titans at Shadow Valley just over a year ago (Feb. 11, 2007), in the teams' first meeting since the 1998-99 season.
The Falcons are 2-0 vs. Duquesne in that series, and BGSU will be meeting the Dukes for the third consecutive season. The Brown and Orange picked up a 6-1 neutral-site win over DU two years ago in Orlando, Fla., as part of the Falcons' school-record 11-match winning streak.
Last year (Feb. 9, 2007), BGSU edged Duquesne by a 4-3 count at Shadow Valley. The Falcons dropped the doubles point, but won at the third through sixth singles flights to pick up the match victory.
"We have enjoyed playing at Shadow Valley, and we want to defend our home court," said Dean. "But, we know we have to stay focused and continue to work hard if we want to continue the success we have enjoyed so far."
Following this weekend's matches, BGSU will play six consecutive road contests, with a month-and-a-half between home matches. After the Duquesne match, the Falcons' next home action will be March 29 vs. Northern Illinois.
