Still a Scramble
Per Thursday's league standings, five teams - three East and two West representatives - currently hold a 7-3 record in conference play ... Bowling Green, Miami and Ohio out of the East sit atop the leader board while Eastern Michigan and Western Michigan look down on the rest of the West division ... Ball State dropped out afer being beaten by Miami on Wednesday night ... if looking at the race through Orange and Brown glasses, to date BGSU has beat only Ohio but has dropped games to Miami and Western Michigan ... Eastern Michigan will travel to the Black Swamp area on Saturday evening ... the Falcons will have a second crack at Ohio and Miami on the road later in the month.
Putting the West to Rest
Bowling Green has just one cross-over game remaining on the schedule from the MAC West ... they will close the Western swing with a home game versus Eastern Michigan on Saturday ... to date the Falcons are 3-2 versus the MAC West including a pair of wins on the road (Toledo and Central Michigan) ... BG's wins in the West have come at an average of +18 points ... since departing from the West Division at the start of the 2005-06 season, Ball State and Western Michigan are the only teams from the division to beat BG.
Orange, Brown and PINK?
The "Think Pink" week for 2008 will be held February 8 - 17 ... the "Think Pink" initiative is a global, unified effort for the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's (WBCA) nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond ... in 2007, more than 120 schools unified for this effort and helped make the inaugural year of the "Think Pink" a success ... BG will be the visiting school as Central Michigan holds their "Think Pink" game on Wednesday (Feb. 13) ... .Bowling Green will host their "Think Pink" game on Saturday, February 16, 2008 as the Eastern Michigan Eagles come to town ... tip-off is 7:00 ... the game will also celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day as the Falcons celebrate the female athlete.
It All Started Jan. 21, 2005 ...
After the Eastern Michigan Eagles beat BGSU on their home court on that fateful day in late January, 2005, by thee points (51-48) the Falcons reign began ... BGSU went on to win 39 consecutive games in Anderson Arena en route to holding one of the longest home winning streaks in the nation ... EMU has returned to the `Double A' just once since that game - Feb. 1, 2006 when BG took a 76-69 win over the Green and White.
Spark Plug
As the Falcons turn their three game losing streak upside down and enjoy a three game win streak reserve post Jennifer Uhl has been a `spark plug' of sorts from the bench ... over those three games, Uhl has averaged 11.7 points and is outscoring two of the Falcons' starters ... she also ranks third in rebounding with an average of 5.3 ... after going 2-of-3 from the field at Toledo, Uhl posted 13 points over NIU while contributing three assists and two steals ... first her assist on Lindsey Goldsberry's three pointer helped the Falcons take what would become permanent control over the score board ... later as the BGSU rookies recorded a 14-8 run on the Huskies, Uhl would be responsible for the latter seven points in that run ... on Wednesday night she went a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line while sinking five from the field ... she finished with a career-high 18 points ... she also pulled in six rebounds ... over the three game span she is shooting nearly .500 from the field (.480) and 83 percent from the line ... she has turned the ball over just twice.
Rose-y Arena
While at Rose Arena on Wednesday night, BGSU set no fewer than three records ... with her second half free throws, senior Kate Achter set the all time career record for free throws made ... Bowling Green's 37 made free throws set program highs in both all and MAC only games erasing records that stood since 1990 (all games, 36 vs. Eastern Michigan, 3/6/90) and 1997 (MAC only, 36 vs. Kent State, 1/12/97) ... with the win, Achter and fellow senior Whitney Taylor join an elite group of both Bowling Green and Mid-American Conference players as the Falcons recorded their 100th win dating back four seasons ... had freshman Lauren Prochaska landed two additional free throws - she was 11-11 - she would have tied the single game rookie record of 13 made free throws under head coach Curt Miller.
Double Punch of POW-POW
Wednesday (Feb. 13) Breske and the Falcons traveled to Central Michigan to not only close the western road portion of their schedule, but to also face MAC West POW Angel Chan ... with Breske and the Falcons taking the win over Chan and the Chips, the MAC East moves to 3-0 when the reigning MAC Player's of the Week face-off ... Ohio won a pair over Ball State and Western Michigan when OU's Lauren Kohn was the East POW challenging Kiley Jarrett (BSU) and Tiera DeLaHoussaye (WMU) two and three games back.
History and Herstory About to be Reality
As the Falcons battle deeper into their season both head coach Curt Miller and seniors Kate Achter and Whitney Taylor are patiently awaiting as they are on the verge of re-writing the BGSU record books ... THREE: with his winning ways back on track Miller needs two wins to tie former head coach Fran Voll's 144 record wins and an additional victory to own the record for most wins as the Falcons leader of the sidelines ... FOUR: since coming to BGSU the seniors have experienced win after win after win after win and have 100 wins under their belts ... they are believed to be only the seventh group to win 100+ games in MAC women's basketball ... the first and last to do so were the 1986-89 Falcons (100) and the 2004-07 Falcons' record setting 103 wins ... in the 90's four classes from Toledo graduated with the distinction 1988-91 (100), 93-96 (100), 94-97 (100) while the 95-98 Rockets boast a program high 101 wins ... the 1997-2000 Golden Flashes of Kent State are the only other group to come close with their 91 wins over four seasons ... if the Falcons win at least four more games this season they will set the MAC women's basketball record for wins over a four year span.
Support Like None Other
As of Feb. 11, 2008 the Falcons remain as the overall attendance leader as they average 1,301 fans per game no matter where their contests maybe ... in nine home games, BGSU has seen a total of 14,091 fans fill Anderson Arena for an average of 1,566 - second best in the MAC ... through those home games, BG is on the fast track to surpass last season's record setting home attendance numbers (1,372 eight games into the home season in 2006-07) ... in conference only games BGSU is THE team to watch drawing an average of 1,516 bodies per game in the stands ... in Anderson Arena the women's basketball program plays in front of an average of 1,566 ... the significance? ... BGSU is on track to possibly overthrow long time attendance leader, Toledo ... for the past 17 seasons the Rockets have drawn the top average crowd.
Countdown to the `Q'
When the Falcons tipped-off on the afternoon of Feb. 9 an estimated month stood between the regular season and the MAC Tournament ... through head coach Curt Miller's tenure, the Falcons are 35-15 in the month before the March tournament ... dating back three seasons, BGSU is 26-2 in February.
Kate Achter - Point Doctor
After starting the season ranking 18th on the all-time scoring list, Kate Achter has moved her way to the top ten with her 1,418 career points ... seperating Achter and the next four places are two, six, 12 and 14 respective points ... reaching fifth overall might be a bit of an upward battle as it will take 104 points to catch up to Liz Honegger's 1,522 career point tally ...with Achter inclusion into the top ten, four of the top ten scorers have been coaches by Curt Miller, while seven of the Top 22 players in the 1,000-Point Clubwere also Falcons under the current coaching staff ... Achter's 32 points versus St. Bonaventure also set a new personal best for the senior; previously her highest scoring game (29 pts.) was a 77-66 win at Belmont - just six days before ... the total is one of the most productive offensive nights in the MAC this season ... in fact, the last time a Falcon scored 30-plus points was Casey McDowell's 31 point showing in the MAC Tournament on March 9, 2005 ... for those keeping track, Achter was just three points shy of tying the program record of 35 points in one game ... former Falcon Francine Miller was the last player to reach the plateau on Feb. 17, 2001; she is one of three players to hold the record and is the only player to account for 35 points in two separate contests ... Achter has scored 20+ points three times this season and has reached double-digit nights on 16 occasions.
Go BIG On The Road ...
Four of the Falcons top scoring outings have occurred on the road this season ... BGSU not only scored 79 points versus Hampton (Dec. 29), but they turned around the next night and scored 78 points over the Skyhawks of UT-Martin (Dec. 30) ... at Kent State (Jan. 16) BG was good for 90-points ... at Toledo the Falcons rattled off 71 points ... BG also dropped 87 points in Mount Pleasant, Mich. at Central Michigan in a five point win ... Ball State was the only MAC road game in which BG did not post at least 70 points.
Bowling Green vs. EMU "Quick Facts"
Eastern Michigan University will pay a visit to Bowling Green, Ohio with a bit of history and a hint of mystery on Saturday ... BGSU has beat the Eagles 41-of-55 times, but during the Curt Miller era, two of those losses play a role in many minds ... first the Eagles beat the Falcons in the 2004 MAC Championship (65-56) ... in the next season, a defeat in Anderson Arena in Jan. became BGSU's last home loss for 39 consecutive games and extended through the 2006-07 season ... since that day, the Falcons have taken four games over the Eagles including two in the MAC tournament ... EMU is 3-1 in Anderson Arena in the six plus seasons under Miller ... senior Kate Achter has been held to single digits just once versus EMU - a five point outing as a freshman ... she has never dished less than three assists vs. the MAC West squad ... Whitney Taylor has never seen action versus EMU ... junior Lindsey Goldsberry has never missed a free throw and is 8-of-8 against EMU ... in her first venture with the Eagles, sophomore Tara Breske pulled down two defensive boards ... no other team has a close record with the Falcons during Miller's tenure ... BGSU leads the series 6-5 under Miller with five of the six wins coming in their last five contests.
