BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - After averaging a point/assist double-double in wins over Kent State and Miami, senior point guard Kate Achter has been named the week's top player in the Mid-American Conference's East division as announced by the league's offices. The award is Achter's third this season and the fifth of her career.
The Oregon, Ohio native first complimented her 16 points with 10 assists as BGSU took a home win over KSU, 76-68, on Wednesday, February 20. At the half, Achter had already scored 12 points, but would go on to dish eight of those helpers in the latter 20:00 of action inside Anderson Arena. In 38-minutes of play, she made six field goals and tossed in four free throws.
Her 16 points versus the Golden Flashes helped her to claim a place in Falcon women's basketball history pushing her to a total of 1,440 career points with the Orange and Brown. The tally enabled Achter to soar to 6th overall on the all-time scoring list.
At Millet Hall on Saturday (Feb. 23) afternoon, Achter helped to rectify an earlier loss to the Miami RedHawks with another 15 points and 10 additional contributors. Nine of those 15 points were scored at the free throw line as the tri-captain was 9-of-11 from the stripe; she hit six down the stretch as the Falcons secured their 10th win of the conference season.
Her performance in Oxford, Ohio helped the all-time free throws made recorder holder extend her count to 506 and become the only player in Falcon women's basketball history to sink more than 500 free throws during their tenure with the program.
Achter and the Falcons have played to a 21-6 overall record this season and with Saturday's win are the overall MAC leader at 10-3 in the league. BG is not yet the clear favorite in the MAC race as the squad will have to travel twice before closing the season. One such contest will be held Wednesday (Feb. 27) in Athens, Ohio where Bowling Green will take on the Ohio University Bobcats at the Convocation Center. Tip-time is set for 7:00 p.m.
Saturday (Mar. 1), the Falcons will fly home for their final match of the season inside Anderson Arena. Both Achter and her classmate Whitney Taylor will be paid tribute prior to the Buffalo game as the BGSU community celebrates senior day. The contest is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.
