BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - On Saturday, March 1 the Bowling Green State University athletic department, in conjunction with the BGSU Student Athlete Advisory Committee, will be hosting a "MAC Mile: Connect Your Kicks" event at the men's (12:30) and women's (4:00) basketball games, as well as the hockey contest (7:35). At all three of these events fans are asked to bring shoes (or other footwear) that they no longer need, and donate them to the less fortunate.
"I am really excited to get the momentum started with this program," said Stephanie Swiger, a senior on the volleyball team, as well as the BGSU Student Athlete Advisory Committee President (SAAC) and Chair of the Mid-American Conference SAAC. "The least we can all do is donate a pair of shoes that we no longer need to those less fortunate and change their lives for the better."
The event will feature all 12 Mid-American Conference schools, as the MAC attempts to collect at least a mile worth of donated shoes. The MAC has partnered with the Share Your Soles organization who will distribute the shoes collected all around the world.
While this "shoe" raiser will take place during the entire month of March, Saturday will be the kickoff of the month's festivities. For anyone that is unable to attend an event on Saturday, but would still like to donate to the cause, can stop by several places throughout campus and "share their soles".
