BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University tennis team returns to action this weekend, hosting a pair of matches. The Falcons of head coach Penny Dean will face the University of Illinois at Chicago in Saturday (Feb. 9) action, before taking on Indiana State University on Sunday (Feb. 10). Both matches will be held at Shadow Valley Tennis Club in Toledo.
First serve for Saturday's UIC match is at 2:00 p.m., while Sunday's ISU match has been moved to a 12:30 p.m. start.
The Falcons enter the weekend with a dual-match record of 3-0. In the team's most recent action, BGSU posted a pair of 7-0 wins at Shadow Valley, downing Youngstown State (Jan. 26) and Wright State (Jan. 27). BG is in the midst of a six-match homestand at the Toledo indoor facility.
All eight members of the Falcons' roster have a winning record in singles play to date. Sophomore Samantha Kintzel leads the way with a 10-3 record, while junior Stefanie Menoff is 9-2 and freshman Christine Chiricosta 9-3.
Junior Kelsey Jakupcin has a singles mark of 6-5 this season, but is a perfect 3-0 at the top singles flight in dual-match play to date. Jakupcin is also a perfect 3-0 at the number-one doubles flight during that time, teaming with Chiricosta in dual action. That duo is a perfect 5-0 this year.
Kintzel is also 3-0 in dual-match singles play, playing at the third flight in the Wright State match and the fourth flight in the other two (Youngstown State and Butler).
Overall, Kintzel and Chiricosta each have 21 combined wins on the season, while Menoff and soph Katia Babina have 18 apiece. All eight Falcons are in double digits in overall wins this year.
BGSU will be looking to extend a pair of lengthy streaks this weekend. The Falcons have won 10 consecutive dual matches at Shadow Valley, and BGSU is 24-1 at the facility over the last three-plus years. BG went 6-0 at Shadow Valley in the 2004-05 season, 8-1 in '05-06 and a perfect 8-0 last year.
The lone loss at Shadow Valley during that time came to Western Michigan. The Falcons have won 21-straight non-conference dual matches at the venue, with the last non-league loss coming over four years ago (Feb. 6, 2004, vs. DePaul).
Saturday's action will be the first dual match of the 2007-08 season for UIC. The Flames, members of the Horizon League, have won 11 consecutive conference titles and made nine NCAA Tournament appearances. UIC has won 93 consecutive league dual matches, last losing to a conference foe on April 21, 1996.
BGSU leads UIC, 9-5, in the all-time series between the teams. The Falcons posted a 5-2 road win over the Flames last season (Jan. 20, 2007), BG's fourth consecutive victory over UIC. The teams have met in each of the last 11 seasons.
Indiana State, like the Falcons, has been idle for nearly two weeks. The Sycamores, 0-1 on the dual-match season, travel to Michigan State on Saturday afternoon before meeting the Falcons the following day. The Sycamores' lone dual of the season to date was a 4-3 loss to Eastern Michigan.
ISU, with just a six-woman roster, played with just five players in the EMU match due to an injury, meaning that the Sycamores automatically lost at one singles and one doubles flight.
BGSU leads Indiana State, 7-5, in the all-time series between the schools. ISU downed the Falcons by a 5-2 result the last time the teams met, two years ago in Terre Haute (Feb. 3, 2006).
