KENT, Ohio - On Friday (Feb. 29) the Bowling Green State University gymnastics team fell to Mid-American Conference leaders, Kent State 194.825-188.475. This is the Falcons second lowest score on the season. While it was a rough night for the team there were some bright spots in the performance of Breanne Guy and Queenita Gamble.
While the Falcons did not the win head coach Kerrie Beach was pleased with Guy and Gamble's performances, "we had an injury on bars to start the night off, which was tough. We regrouped and did an ok job on the next events. We had some highlights; Breanne Guy did a nice vault tonight. Floor, Queenie Gamble stepped up and did a nice job there. Finally the beam team had a nice night, highlighted by Guy and Gamble. The whole line-up did a great job making the changes tonight."
Guy claimed the all-around title with a score of 37.675. She posted two scores of 9.750 on both the vault and beam. She claimed third on vault and tied for first on beam. Gamble landed a 9.675 on beam and a 9.600 on floor.
The team opened the meet up on bars where they lost their fourth gymnast, Morgan Balzer to an injury. The Orange and Brown did all they could to fight back from a 2.5 point deficit but fell short. Jholeen Ponce led the team on bars with a score of 9.625 which placed her in fifth.
On vault Guy led the team and was followed by Jacque Bernhardt who posted a 9.650. Gamble led the team on floor, while Bernhardt followed close behind with a 9.575.
As a team the Falcons posted their lowest event scores all season except on beam. However, the team will get another go at it tomorrow night (March 1) as they travel to Penn State to compete in a quad meet. Tonight the team wore pink uniforms to help support breast cancer. Tomorrow night the Falcons will be "back in black" for a 7:00 p.m. competition.
Beach is looking to the fresh start tomorrow night, "tomorrow we are looking to regroup. Tonight was an emotional night so we are looking to staying more focused tomorrow."
