CLEVELAND, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - Five home games, including the first-ever Big Ten Conference opponent in Doyt L. Perry Stadium history, highlight the Bowling Green State University football team's 2008 schedule. The Mid-American Conference office released the 2008 league schedule Tuesday afternoon (March 11).
The Falcons' five home games include a contest vs. the Minnesota Golden Gophers on Sept. 6. BGSU also will play four MAC games at `The Doyt' in '08, hosting Eastern Michigan (Oct. 4), Miami (Oct. 18), Kent State (Nov. 1) and Buffalo (Nov. 21). The EMU game has been designated as Homecoming at the University.
"Our goal here at Bowling Green is to compete for MAC Championships, as well as secure a bowl game each season," said BGSU head coach Gregg Brandon. "Our non-conference schedule will challenge us each week, while the MAC is so strong from top to bottom that there are no easy conference games. Our work is cut out for us."
Bowling Green will open the 2008 season with a trip to Pittsburgh on Aug. 30. The last Big East Conference opponent the Falcons faced was South Florida in 2002.
The following weekend marks the game against Minnesota, a team BGSU beat, 32-31 in overtime, last season inside the Metrodome. The Golden Gophers, as mentioned, will become the first-ever Big Ten school to play inside Perry Stadium. The game also will mark the first BCS school the Falcons have hosted since Missouri came to Bowling Green in 2002.
The Falcons' other two non-conference games will be road trips to Boise State (Sept. 13) and Wyoming (Sept. 27). The Falcons played at Boise State in the 2005 season. Wyoming will be the first team from the Mountain West Conference that the Falcons have played since Texas Christian in 1988.
BGSU begins MAC play on Oct. 4 with the Homecoming game vs. EMU. The Falcons' MAC road contests will include games at Akron (Oct. 11), Northern Illinois (Oct. 25), Ohio (Nov. 8) and Toledo (Nov. 28).
The MAC's two divisional winners will meet in the MAC Championship game, which will be held at Ford Field in downtown Detroit on Dec. 5.
Kickoff times and television information will be announced as the season draws closer.
