Falcons Impress In First Outdoor Meet

BLUFFTON, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University Falcon women's track and field team kicked off their 2008 outdoor season this morning despite the weather that canceled the Toledo Collegiate Challenge. The Falcons traveled to Bluffton University and captured first place in their opener. The Orange and Brown looked impressive against the likes of Albion College, Defiance College, Huntington University, Bluffton University and Tri-State University. The Falcons finished with an overall point total of 253 points which was just under 100 points more than second place, Albion (153.50). Defiance took third place with 115 points, while Huntington (76), Bluffton (52.50), Bowling Green Track Club (10), Tri-State (8) rounded out the top seven spots, respectively. Bowling Green dominated all aspects of the track and field events taking home 32 top-five finishes, to produce their best point total of the season.
In the short-distance events, eight different Falcons combined for three first place finishes, two second place finishes and two third place finishes. In the 100 meter dash Shantell Lewis came out in first with a time of 12.68 seconds, while teammates Sarah Hooten (12.79) and Rachel Doughty (13.05) rounded out the top three positions for the speedsters. In the 200 meter dash two freshmen stepped up for the Falcons and came out with a first and third place finish. Tiffany Dziak with a time of 26.54 seconds took top honors while Brittany Johnson took third, finishing close behind her teammate with a time 26.79 seconds. Sophomore Kristen Carver added four points for the Falcons, finishing fifth with a time of 27.71 seconds. BGSU rounded out the short-distance events with the top two positions in the 400 meter dash. Heather Conger finished first with a time of 1:00.51 while teammate Hillary Hewit finished just under a second behind her teammate, with a time of 1:01.50.
In the only mid-distance event of the day, the Falcons swept first through fifth place. Danielle Thornton (2:21.91 finished first, while teammates Autumn Dettmann (2:23.15), Barbara Powers (2:29.57), Andrea Pereira de Almeida (2:32.28), Lauren Zielke (2:32.46) rounded out the top five positions. The top five finishes by De Almeida and Zielke marked their first top five finishes this track and field season.
The Falcons competed in one long distance event today, in which they swept the competition again, taking home the top five positions. Jamie Roflow added another top finish to her resume, taking home the top spot in the 1,500 meter run. Roflow had a time of 4:45.00, while teammates Lyndi Springer (4:50.00), Barbara Powers (4:58.93), Kylie Korsnack (5:09.06) and Megan Kelsey (5:09.06) helped the Falcons accrue 24 more points as the rounded out the top five. In all, BGSU wracked up 36 points from the 1,500 meter run.
The Falcon throwers followed their impressive indoor season with a great performance today. The Orange and Brown took home the top two positions in the shot put, the top three positions in the discuss throw, and the top three positions in the hammer throw. Senior Liz Honegger led the Falcons in the shot put with, taking home top honors with a mark of 12.72 meters. Junior Whitney Hartman took second place with a throw of 12.30 meters. Hartman added a first place finish in the discus throw, with a throw of 40.03 meters, while senior teammate Lauren Bryant (39.93m) finished a close second. Honegger (39.70m) followed up her first place performance with a third place finish. Roles reversed for the senior and junior throwers, as they swapped places in the hammer throw. Bryant took home first place with a throw of 53.09 meters while Hartman (50.03) finished a close second to her teammate.
Notables: Freshman Tara Weiss took eighth place in the 800 meter run, adding one point to the Falcons total. Weiss also added two points, while finishing seventh in the 1,500 meter run.
Freshman Kristina Wilson finished third in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 17.86.
BGSU took top honors in the 4x100 and 4x400 meter relays.
Freshman Meghan Gill added ten points for the Falcons with a first place finish in long jump competition with a mark of 1.60 meters. Freshman teammate Elizabeth Stone finished a close second with a mark of 1.55 meters.
Sophomore Stacey Turak finished third in the hammer throw with a distance of 38.98 meters.
Junior Kylie Korsnack finished first in the javelin throw with a mark of 30.86 meters.
Next on the agenda for the Falcons will be a trip to Cincinnati, Ohio for the Oliver Nikoloff Invitational. Events are scheduled to take place Saturday, April 5.
