BRADENTON, Fla. - Villanova right fielder James Dolbier hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning that helped lead the Wildcats to 10-8 come-from-behind victory over the Bowling Green State University baseball team on Tuesday afternoon in game four of the Falcons' Spring Break trip. The Tuesday afternoon tilt was held at Academy Park, located at the IMG Academies in Bradenton, Fla.
With the victory, the Wildcats moved to 2-6 on the year, while the Falcons fell to 1-6. The loss was the fifth-straight for the Falcons and fourth in-a-row since the start of their trip.
Leading the way at the plate for the Falcons on the day were junior Brian Hangbers and freshman catcher Ryan Schlater who had three hits apiece. Hangbers finished 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, while Schlater went 3-for-4 with a run scored and tied a game-high with three RBI.
With the Falcons leading 8-5 heading into the Wildcat sixth, junior right-hander Dusty Hawk issued a leadoff walk to begin the inning. He recovered though to retire the next two batters and get himself in position to get out of the innning with little damange. However, one hit batter later and another walk, loaded up the bases for first baseman Dan Terpak. Hawk worked Terpak to a full count, before the first baseman ripped a line drive up the middle into center field to plate two runners and make the score 8-7.
Down a run, Dolbier came to the plate with runners on the corners and hit a 1-2 pitch over the fence in right field to give the Wildcats a 10-8 lead, which would end up being the game's final count.
Hawk (0-1) was saddled with the loss for the Falcons throwing 1.2 innings where he gave up five runs on three hits.
Earning the win for the Wildcats was Kevin Crimmel who threw four innings of scoreless relief, giving up just Falcon hits.
Crimmmel's pitching slowed down a Falcon offensive attack that put up eight runs in the game's first four innings as BG led 8-4 after the top half of the fourth. The Falcons platted three in the top part of the second to take an early 3-0 lead, before the Wildcats stormed back with fourth in the bottom half of the inning to go up by a single run.
A single to right center by Schlater tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the third, before the Falcon bats exploded with four runs in top of the fourth off Wildcat starter Ryan Wendler.
Andrew Foster led-off the inning with a single to left and was followed by a single to right by Hangbers to put runners on the corners with no outs. Derek Spencer then drew a walk to load up the bases, before a double to right by Dennis Vaughn platted two runs to give BG a 6-4 lead.
That was where Crimmel took over for Wendler, but despite the change, the Falcons would keep swinging. After Chris Gacom went down swinging, pinch hitter Logan Meisler singled through the right side to score Spencer. A sacrifice bunt by Schlater then gave BG an 8-4 advantage heading into the bottom of the fourth.
The Wildcats would recover though to score a single run in their half of the fourth, before their big five-run sixth.
BG left two runners on in the seventh and another on in the eighth as they weren't able to mount another charge.
Freshman Patrick Martin kept the Wildcats off the board with 2.1 innings of scoreless relief to end the game, but it wouldn't be enough as BG went down in order in the ninth.
Starting the game for BG was right-hander Frank Berry who went four innings allowing five runs (one earned) on eight hits. Both squads committed just a single error in the contest.
After a break on Wednesday, the Falcons will return to action with two games on Thursday. Up first will be a 10 a.m. game with Fairfield University, before the Falcons will end their day with a 6 p.m. first pitch against Florida Gulf Coast.
