FORT MYERS, Fla. - A three-homer by sophomore Derek Spencer in the top of the third inning propelled the Bowling Green State University baseball team to its' second win of the day with a 5-2 win on Thursday night over Florida Gulf Coast. The Thursday night tilt was played at FGCU's Swanson Stadium.
With the win, the Falcons moved to 3-6 on the year, while they ended the Eagles four-game win streak, who fell to 8-2 with the loss.
With the Falcons trailing 2-0 going into the top half of the third and with two outs, BG got two runners on base to setup the game-winning hit by Spencer. Andrew Foster reached base on an error, before Frank Berry singled to put a runner on first and second. That brought up Spencer, who sent the second pitch he faced over the fence in left for his first homer of the season and just the third overall by a Falcon bat, as BG took a 3-2 lead.
Spencer would finish his evening 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored and three RBI. Foster was 2-for-5 with a run scored as he got the start at catcher.
Center fielder T.J. Blanton added two more Falcon runs in the ninth as he belted a two-run single with the bases juiced to end the game's scoring. The sophomore also collected two hits for BG going 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Picking up the win on the hill for the Falcons was senior right-hander Nick Cantrell (1-2), who pitched a scoreless 4.2 innings of relief. The Waldo, Ohio native struck out a career-high six batters and walked just one as he didn't allow a single hit.
Getting the start on the evening was senior Brett Browning who went 4.1 innings surrendering just two runs on four hits, while recording three strikeouts.
Earning the loss for FGCU was Patrick Nathanson who allowed three runs on six hits with five strikeouts in seven innings of work.
The Falcons, riding a season-best two-game win streak, will return to action again tomorrow in Bradenton, Fla. with their third game of the week against Northeastern. First pitch between the Falcons and Huskies is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
