Falcons Travel To Puerto Rico For Second Outing of the Spring Season

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University men's golf team will travel to Huarenco, Puerto Rico on Mar. 10-11 to compete in the 2008 Palmas Del Mar Intercollegiate, hosted by St. John's University.

Last Time Out
The Bowling Green State University men's golf team opened its' 2008 spring season last weekend, carding a 913 in the 54-hole event. They opened the tournament with a 311-308 after sitting out the previous four months between seasons. In the final round the Falcons fired a 294, the lowest round of the day of the 15-team field to climb three spots and finish the tournament in ninth place at the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate.
Individually the Falcons were led by Matt Schneider (226, 20th), John Powers (228, 25th) and Jace Walker (229, 31st). Senior Trevor Spathelf, who finished the tournament in 42nd place, carded a 71 on the final day of competition, the lowest round of an individual that afternoon.
Schneider Earns MAC Golfer of the Week
The Mid-American Conference announced last week that Matt Schneider earned the first MAC Golfer of the Week for the spring season. In his first live action in over four months the sophomore began the tournament going 76-77. The Grand Rapids, Minn., native saved his best for last, carding a 73, the fifth-best round of the day. He finished 20th in the 81-person field at the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate. On the year the sophomore is averaging 73.18 strokes a round, second-best on the team.
Walker Closes In on Winger
Senior Jace Walker is averaging 72.13 strokes a round this season, tops in the conference according to www.mac-sports.com. Not only does that 72.13 lead all golfer in the MAC, that average is currently the lowest-ever in a season by a Falcon, surpassing current men's head coach Garry Winger, who averaged 72.4 strokes a round in 1994. Winger, who also owns the lowest ever career average at BGSU with a 75.00, leads Walker by a small fraction. The St. Thomas, Ontario native has played in 105 rounds, carding 7,877 stroke in his career for a 75.02 career average.

Following the trip down south the orange and Brown will return to the Midwest for the Hoosier Invitational, host by Indiana University on March 29-30.
