BRADENTON, Fla. - Junior left-hander Kevin Light struck out six and allowed a single run in six innings of work as he led the Bowling Green State University baseball team to its' third-straight victory with a 4-2 win on Friday afternoon over Northeastern. The Friday afternoon tilt was held at Academy Park at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla.
The win moved the Falcons to 4-6 on the season and dropped the Huskies to 5-3. BG finished their trip to Florida 3-4 overall after starting the spring trip 0-4.
Light, making just his second career start for the Falcons, allowed just four hits in his outing and didn't allow a single runner to reach base on balls. The transfer from Longwood moved to 1-1 on the year with the victory as the Falcons jumped out to a 2-0 in the second and added two more in the third to jump out to an early 4-0 lead.
They'd withstand single runs by the Huskies in the seventh and ninth to earn their third win in two days.
Earning the first save of the season for the BG bullpen was junior Marty Baird, who tossed the final three innings of the game and gave up one run on two hits.
BG got the game's scoring started in the top half of the second following a fly out to start their at bat. With one out, Logan Meisler singled to the left side and was followed by David Borcherdt who hit a single of his own to right field. With runners on first and second and a single out, freshman catcher Ryan Schlater hit a two-run double to left center to drive in his sixth and seventh runners of the season.
Schlater finished 1-for-4 on the day with two RBI.
Up 2-0, the Falcons added two more to their total in third with an RBI single by Mark Galvin and a sacrifice fly by Borcherdt.
Galvin finished 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Borcherdt was 1-for-1, also with an RBI.
A solo homer by Mike Lyon in the seventh and an RBI groundout by left fielder Mike Tamsin would score NU's lone runs of the game.
Getting saddled with the loss for the Huskies was Kris Dabrowiecki (0-1) who gave up four runs on eight hits in six innings on the hill.
BG will return to action Wednesday, March 12 when they head to Cincinnati to battle the Bearcats in a mid-week non-conference showdown. First pitch is scheduled to be thrown at 4 p.m.
The Falcons game against the University of Vermont, originally scheduled for Saturday in Bradenton was cancelled due to the snow storms expected back home in both respective locations.
