BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - A four-goal second period helped key a 6-1 victory for the Lake Superior State Lakers on Saturday night over the Bowling Green State University hockey team in game two of the best-of-three Central Collegiate Hockey Association series. The Saturday night tilt was played at the BGSU Ice Arena.
The victory moved the Lakers to 10-19-7 on the season and dropped the Falcons to 17-19-0. The win by LSSU also guaranteed a decisive game three, which will take place at 7:05 p.m. Sunday once again at the Ice Arena as the series in now tied at a game apiece after the Falcons'4-3 win on Friday.
After the teams played to a 0-0 stalemate in the game's first 20 minutes, the Lakers' offense awoke in the second, as they lit the lamp four times, while BG could only do so once. The Lakers would then add a pair of tallies in the third to put the game out of reach.
Leading the way on the night for LSSU was sophomore defenseman Simon Gysbers, who recorded a game-high three points on a pair of goals and an assist. Also tying for a game-high with a playmaker (three aasists) was sophomore forward Zac MacVoy, while freshman forward Will Acton also added a pair of lamp lighters.
BG was led on the evening by freshman forward Jacob Cepis who tallied the Falcons' lone goal in the second period. Senior tri-captains John Mazzei and Derek Whitmore then recorded helpers. For Cepis it was his 14th goal of the season as Mazzei picked up his 11th assist and Whitmore picked up his ninth.
"Tomorrow is a new day," said BG coach Scott Paluch. "Obviously the series isn't over tonight and we have to rebound tomorrow and find a way to win this thing. I thought we did a good job tonight in finding a way to survive the first period after we didn't play as well as we did last night, but the second period hurt us. We made some poor defensive decisions that put us on our heels and we just didn't take advantage of our opportunities. We had chances to put the puck in the net, but just didn't get the second chances that we need to be creating."
Unlike the first period the night before when BG took a 3-0 lead, the first period Saturday night would go scoreless. LSSU fired nine shots on net in the opening stanza, while BG put eight on Laker goaltender Pat Inglis.
The second period would be a much different story though, as LSSU exploded for four goals and took full control of the game's momentum. Acton tallied the first at the 4:59 mark as Matt Cowie and Gysbers recorded the assists.
Pat Aubry would then net the eventual game-winning goal at the 7:50 mark with Gysbers following shortly after 8:51 to give the Lakers a 3-0 lead.
BG wouldn't let things get out of control however, as Cepis netted his goal on the Falcon power play at 11:12 to get the game back to a two-goal difference at 3-1.
That would be as close as the Falcons would get the rest of the evening as Gysbers added a power-play goal for the Lakers at 14:19 of the second and Acton and Dan Eves added third period goals to give the game its' final count.
Starting in net on the night for the Falcons was freshman Nick Eno who stopped 20-of-24 LSSU shots he faced. He was replaced at the start of the third period by junior Jimmy Spratt who finished the game with six saves on eight shots.
The Falcons finished their night 1-for-4 on the power play, while the Lakers finished 1-for-8.
Both teams will return to the ice tomorrow for the before mentioned game three at 7:05 p.m. All the action can be heard by tuning into WBGU 88.1 FM with Danny Nieves and Bob Mills on the call.
