BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Falcons were able to defeat the Broncos, 2-1, Saturday (April 19) afternoon before the over cast rainy weather set it over the BGSU Softball Field. With the victory the Falcons improve to 11-20 overall and 9-3 in the MAC while the Broncos fall to 14-13 overall and 6-5 in the MAC.
"Today was an all out team effort," said Head Coach Shannon Salsburg. "We didn't hit the ball exceptionally well but found ways to score through good base running and people being able to work the count. Gouge did a great job of coming in and shutting them down and mixing it up. Today is a great example of a MAC Tournament game, which is preparing us for later in the season. We have to come back tomorrow and play hard."
Hayley Wiemer made her 15th start in the circle of the season for the Falcons keeping the Broncos scoreless for the first five innings, giving up only one run in the sixth. Saturday's match-up between the Falcons and the Broncos was a battle between the two defenses.
The Falcons got their bats started early with back-to-back singles from Susan Sontag and Wiemer in the first inning, however they weren't able to score. The Broncos and pitcher Kyla Sullivan were able to keep the Falcon bats quiet until the bottom of the fifth inning as freshman Rachel Delp crushed a homer over the left field fence to put the Falcons on the score board first, 1-0.
The Broncos came right back in the top of the sixth as they put together back-to-back singles bring in Emily Gouge to relieve Wiemer. The Broncos ended up scoring on a Falcon wild pitch to tie the game up, 1-1.
In the bottom of the sixth the Bronco's put Wiemer and Allison Vallas on base with two base-on-balls. Then with one out Missy Bowman stepped up to the plate and hit a grounder to the third baseman who tried to get the Falcon's lead runner at third but made a throwing error allowing the Falcons to score and take a 2-1 lead. The Falcons weren't able to score any more runs in the bottom of the sixth but one run turned out to be enough to win the game as the Falcons held the Broncos in the top of the seventh.
The Falcon bats were led by Wiemer going one-for-two on the day. Sontag and Delp both went one-for-three with Delp recording her second homer of the season and a RBI blasting a 1.333 slugging percentage on the day.
Emily Gouge picked up her third win of the season as she struck out one batter and allowed no hits in 1.2 innings against the Broncos.
The Falcons will finish their home portion of the 2008 schedule as they honor their three seniors, Dawnjene DeLong, Emily Gouge and Allison Vallas and host Western Michigan in game two of the series Sunday (April 20) with the first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
