BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Ten runs in the first three innings helped the Bowling Green State University baseball team get back in the win column on Tuesday afternoon as the Falcons went on to collect 21 runs on 18 hits on way to a 21-1 rout of Albion at Warren E. Steller Field. A total of nine different Falcons recorded a hit in the game, including six with two or more hits as BG ended its' three-game skid, improving to 18-16 overall, while the Britons fell to 10-21.
Responsible for eleven of the Falcons' 19 total RBI in the game were five-hole hitters and second basemen Logan Meisler and Chris Gacom. Meisler was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate on the afternoon, coming a double short of hitting for the cycle as he launched his third homer of the season in the Falcon first and tripled in the third on way to picking up five total RBI. Gacom, who replaced Meisler as a pinch hitter in the fifth, made sure that five-hole power didn't suffer on his behalf. The Sagamore Hills, Ohio native went 2-for-3 at the plate with his first two homers of the season, including a grand slam in the sixth, on way to recording a game-high six RBI.
Those two weren't alone in the effort however, as adding three hits on the day were both Brian Hangbers and Dennis Vaughn. Hangbers, like Meisler, was a perfect 3-for-3 at the dish, accounting for two runs and driving in one. Vaughn, like Gacom then, finished one hit short of the cycle, as only a home run stood in his way as the sophomore finished 3-for-5 with four runs scored and two RBI.
Also collecting multiple-hits in the game and RBI were freshman Clay Duncan and junior Ryan Shay.
BG scored three runs in the bottom half of the first and seven more in the home half of the third to take an early 10-0 advantage. The lead continued to grow in the fourth when they plated four more runs to increase the lead to 14-0, before adding two in the fifth and a five-spot in the sixth to give them their final count.
Earning his second win of the season on the mound was freshman right-hander Brennan Smith, who improved to 2-1 on the season. The Sandusky, Ohio native tossed five scoreless innings, allowing just two hit, while recording four strikeouts. His effort improved his season ERA at home to 2.84 in 19 total innings of work as he is now 2-0 at Steller Field.
Others seeing time on the mound for the Falcons on the day were junior Kevin Light, freshman Dan Parsons and sophomore Phil Hettlinger. The three combined to allow a run on six hits in the final four innings, while adding four more strikeouts.
Most of the Falcons damage in the game was done in the home half of the third, where they tallied seven runs on five hits. Andrew Foster led-off the frame getting hit by a pitch, before being advanced to third on a single by Hangbers to put runners on the corners. Vaughn drew a four-pitch walk to the load the bases and was followed by Meisler, who cleared the bases a three-RBI triple to right center to give BG a 6-0 lead.
Mark Galvin followed Meisler with a walk, which brought an end to Britons' reliever Brian Hearns' day after replacing starter Dan Zech to start the inning. Hearns' replacement Brett Devereaux was welcomed to the hill by Duncan, who doubled down the left field line to score two more BG runs, to give the Falcons an 8-0 edge. Travis Owens later collected an RBI on a sacrifice fly, before Hangbers brought home the seventh run of the inning with an RBI-double to the right field gap.
For Hangbers, it was RBI number 26 on the year, as his was one of a season-high 19 recorded by BG on the day.
Smith would continue his dominance on the mound after the third inning retiring five of the next six Briton batters he faced to end his outing, tossing 80 total pitches on the afternoon.
His counterpart, Zech (0-1), earned the loss in his first career start, going just two innings as he allowed three runs on three hits.
The Britons were paced at the plate by infielder Steven Kish, who was the lone Albion batter to record multiple-hits, going 2-for-3.
The Britons left eight total runners stranded on the base paths, as the Falcons turned were able to turn two double plays.
BG will return to the diamond on Wednesday afternoon when they face-off with the Grizzlies of Oakland University.
