Katia Babina Named to MAC All-Tournament Team

BUFFALO, N.Y. (BGSUFalcons.com) - Bowling Green State University sophomore Katia Babina has been named to the 2008 Mid-American Conference Women's Tennis All-Tournament Team. The announcement was made Sunday afternoon (April 27) following the championship match of the conference tournament at the Ellicott Tennis Facility on the University at Buffalo campus.
Babina earned the honor after helping the Falcons advance to the semifinal round of the MAC Championships for the second time in as many years. On Friday (April 25), Babina was instrumental in BGSU's win over Eastern Michigan in the quarterfinal round.

Then, in singles action, the teams split the first four matches which finished, giving BGSU a 3-2 match lead. After losing her opening set to Tina Bestehorn by a 6-2 result, the Falcon soph battled back to win a second-set tiebreaker, and went on to a 6-4 victory in the third set. Babina's victory at the third singles flight clinched the match and a trip to the semifinals for the Falcons.
BGSU's season ended on Saturday (April 26), with a 4-0 loss to top-seeded Western Michigan in the semifinals.
Babina ended the season with a stellar overall record of 44-16, ranking second on the team in wins. She went 17-11 in singles, and had an eye-popping 27-5 doubles mark. Babina's total of doubles wins was the third-highest figure in BGSU history.
In dual-match action, Babina had a 13-7 singles record, all at the third flight. She was 17-3 in dual-match doubles play, including a 6-1 MAC regular-season record.
After just two seasons in the Brown and Orange, Babina has 65 total wins.
The Falcons posted a 16-5 record in 2007-08, tying the school record for wins. BGSU's winning percentage of .762 is the program's highest in three decades.
Buffalo's Smaranda Stan was named the 2008 MAC Championships MVP. Stan and the Bulls won the title with a 4-3 win over WMU on Sunday. Teammate Denise Harijanto also made the all-tournament squad. Miami's Cara Wald and the WMU duo of Kerstin Pahl and Amanda Moccia joined Babina in rounding out the team.
