BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University baseball program and head coach Danny Schmitz has announced the dates for their two annual Summer Baseball Camps, which will be held at Warren E. Steller Field and at the BGSU Softball Field. Camp one, the Pitching and Catching Camp, will be held from Monday, June 9th to Wednesday, June 11th, while camp two, the Hitting Camp, will be held from Monday, June 16th and will run till Wednesday, June 18th.
Both camps will be conducted by coach Schmitz and his 2008 coaching staff. Schmitz, now in his 18th year at the helm of the baseball program, has 477 career wins, making him the winningest coach in BGSU sports history. In his tenure with the Falcons, he has led BG to four Mid-American Conference East Division Championships, two MAC Regular-Season Championships, two MAC Tournament titles and two NCAA Tournament appearances. In 2002, BGSU won the MAC Regular-Season Championship and was the host of the 2002 MAC Tournament. In addition, the Falcons led the nation in batting average (.360) and slugging percentage (.599) in 2001.
Over the past six seasons, Schmitz has coached four All-Americans, two MAC Players of the Year and had six players get drafted. Included in that list is current Florida Marlins' pitcher, Burke Badenhop. In his 18 years at BG, Schmitz has had 25 players get drafted or sign professional contracts.
Schmitz will be aided in the camps by assistant coaches Rick Blanc, Spencer Schmitz and Dave Whitmire, along with all the players of the 2008 Falcon baseball team.
Blanc, the new pitching coach for the Falcons, played for BG during the 1997 and 1998 seasons. He joined the Falcon coaching staff this season after holding the same duties at Division I Independent Longwood University the past four seasons. This past season the Lancers finished 18th in the final national rankings with a 3.60 team ERA.
Joining Blanc on the Falcon staff from Longwood is assistant coach Spencer Schmitz, who is in his second stint as a member of the BGSU coaching staff. A former Falcon player, Spencer has already had numerous coaching experiences in his young career. Last season at Longwood, he helped the Lancers finish with a team batting average of .313, which placed them 32nd on the national list. He, along with Blanc, helped the Division I Independent program to a 34-19 record. Other coaching experiences for Spencer include, serving as the top assistant for the Bowling Green High School team, serving as the assistant general manager and top assistant coach for the Lake Erie Monarchs of the Great Lakes Summer Baseball League and serving as an assistant to coach Whitmire on the Whitehouse Legion team out of Whitehouse, Ohio in 2004.
Whitmire, who is now in his seventh season with the BGSU baseball program, serves as the Falcons' outfield coach and handles the first-base coaching duties during the games. He is widely known around the Northwest Ohio baseball world, due to his numerous coaching successes around the area. He joined the Falcon baseball staff after serving two years as an assistant coach at Owens Community College, where he helped the Express to two OCCAC Championships and a Region 12 Championship in 1999 and 2000. Before his time at Owens, he was the head baseball coach at Otsego High School for three seasons where he lead the Knights to a combined 48-26 record and a Suburban Lakes League title in 1997. He is also the founder and president of the Northwest Ohio Amateur Baseball League and is the Northwest Ohio State Director of USSSA Baseball. His Whitehouse American Legion Baseball team in Whitehouse, Ohio went 94-42 between 2002 and 2004, which included a trip to the World Series in Bartelsville, Oklahoma in 2003.
The four coaches and Falcon players will coach a Pitching and Catching Camp in their first session that will focus on learning the proper techniques and drills that are used by the Falcon pitching staff and catchers. The second session, a Hitting Camp, will teach campers the proper hitting techniques and form they need to be successful hitters, along with specialized drills they can use to continue their development after the camp.
