BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Much like Sunday against Central Michigan, errors and unearned runs once again hurt the Bowling Green State University baseball team on Tuesday as three unearned runs in the game's first five innings allowed the University of Dayton to grab a 6-0 lead, which the Falcons never recovered from as they fell 7-2 to the Flyers in an afternoon non-conference meeting at Warren E. Steller Field. The Falcons committed four errors in total for the game, while they could only gather seven hits against Flyers' pitching as UD pounded out 15 hits on way to improving to 15-14 on the year, while the Falcons fell to 12-12.
The loss marked the third-straight for the Falcons, as they are now just 1-5 in their last six games after they had rolled off 10 wins in 11 contests.
Taking the loss on the mound was junior left-hander Brian Hangbers (1-2), who got his second start of the year. The Hamilton, Ohio native went 3.2 innings, allowing four runs (two earned) on eight hits.
Also seeing action on the Falcon hill was freshman Brennan Smith and sophomore Phil Hettlinger. Smith tossed 3.1 innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits, while Hettlinger threw the game's final two innings, allowing a run on three hits.
BG got itself in a hole early, allowing the Flyers single runs in each of the first four innings and two in the fifth, before finally finding the scoreboard in their half of the frame. The Falcons added a run in the bottom half of the eighth to bring the score to 6-2 entering the ninth, but surrendered another Flyer run in the top part of the inning as they went down in order in the bottom part to end the game.
Junior Ryan Shay led the Falcon attack on the day as he was 2-for-2, getting hits in both his trips to the plate. In doing so, the Garden City, Mich. native extended his career-long hit streak to 15 games as he entered the game in the sixth inning as a defensive replacement at shortstop.
Collecting RBI for BG were Marty Baird and Logan Meisler as Baird recorded an RBI-single in the eighth, while Meisler picked up his first sacrifice fly of the season in the fifth. A total of six Falcons collected hits in the game as 18 total players, including the pitchers, saw action.
UD got the game's scoring started in the top of the first when a BG error allowed leadoff-man Jacob Spaeth to reach first to start the inning. Scott Dunwoody followed with groundout that resulted in a double play, but another fielding error by BG allowed Marshall MacDonald to reach when the inning should've been over.
Two-straight UD singles following the error plated MacDonald to give UD a 1-0 lead.
Another Falcon error led to UD platting another unearned run in the second to stretch the lead to 2-0. With one out, Spaeth reached first on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a botched BG attempt at a double play, which allowed Jimmy Roesinger to come around and score from second.
Ryan Nevill and MacDonald picked up RBI-singles in the third and fourth to increase the lead to 4-0, before Roesinger and Kevin Miller platted two more in the fifth.
Miller, Nevill and MacDonald were just 3-of- 6 Flyers who finished the day with multiple base knocks. Shortstop Cole Tyrell paced UD with three hits, going 3-for-5 with a run scored and two RBI.
Earning the victory on the mound for UD was right-handed starter Sean Finn (2-1) who went five innings, allowing a single run on three hits.
BG will return to the diamond on Wednesday when they battle their second-straight opponent from the Atlantic 10, as they'll head to Cincinnati to take on the Xavier Musketeers. First pitch from Hayden Field will be thrown at 3 p.m. as live statistics for the game can be found by visiting the baseball team's schedule page on www.bgsufalcons.com
