BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Softball Falcon Halyey Wiemer has been named the Mid-American Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week for the week of May 8; the distinction was announced Wednesday (May 14) afternoon.
Wiemer's work against Ohio and Akron (May 2-4) led to the honor as she tied her own homerun record tallying long ball's number 10 and 11 as BGSU finalized the regular season with a pair of back-to-back road wins. Highlights from that weekend include the junior's third conference shutout and a hit-less effort by the Zip's during her tenure in the circle.
During the weekend, Wiemer's numbers included three runs and four RBI's on four hits. She also counted nine retired opposing batters.
The Falcons went on to end the season with a 19-24 record and third place at the conference tournament last week.
Wiemer, a Sylvania, Ohio native, has earned four MAC SAW awards while representing the Orange and Brown. The third year pitcher carries a perfect 4.00 grade point average as an Adolescent/Young Adult/Secondary Education major at the University. She is also the reigning BGSU Junior Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
In 2008, she tied her own single season homerun record firing another 11 balls out of the park making her the only player in program history to reach double-digit HR efforts in consecutive seasons. In three complete seasons at BG she has blasted 23 career bombs and sits second only to Gina Rango's 26.
At the time of her nomination, Wiemer was listed as seventh in the nation in the walks allowed per seven innings category while also ranking as the seventh most walked player in the NCAA. Since then, she has become one of the top five players walked throughout the country. Currently, she is listed in the Top 100 of six major NCAA categories.
The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during that week's competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
